Lausanne, April 9 (NationPress) World Boxing has established an interim committee to manage the operations of the Boxing Federation of India (BFI), in response to appeals from Indian boxing stakeholders who expressed concerns regarding the governance of the national organization.
In a correspondence dated April 7, directed to BFI president Ajay Singh, the international boxing authority indicated that it had received requests from Indian boxing stakeholders aimed at restoring stability to the sport in India and emphasizing the necessity for an interim structure that is consistent with the statutes and vision of World Boxing.
The interim committee, led by BFI president Ajay Singh, is composed of BFI vice president Narender Kumar Nirwan, BFI executive director Arun Malik, and Olympian L. Sarita Devi. Additionally, one nominee from the National Olympic Committee (IOA) will be selected in consultation with the IOA president.
Fairuz, the president of the Singapore Boxing Association, will serve as a representative from World Boxing to observe and validate the committee's work.
The committee is set to be formed immediately for a duration not exceeding 90 days. Its responsibilities will include: 1) Managing the day-to-day operations of BFI, ensuring administrative continuity. 2) Organizing domestic boxing events, including National Championships, in a fair, transparent, and inclusive manner to ensure participation. 3) Selecting Indian boxing teams for international competitions based on a timely selection policy. 4) Collaborating with SAI, IOA, and relevant national stakeholders to safeguard the interests of Indian boxing and its athletes. 5) Overseeing financial matters, including managing BFI’s bank accounts to ensure transparency and accountability.
6) Representing BFI in all current and future legal proceedings, with the authority to act in the Federation's best interests. 7) Initiating the revision and alignment of the BFI Constitution with the statutes of World Boxing and Indian legal requirements. 8) Addressing issues related to the registration and legality of the Indian boxing body. 9) Ensuring India's readiness to host the World Boxing Finals and World Boxing Congress, both critical milestones for Indian and global boxing. 10) Facilitating the conduct of fair, transparent, and legally compliant elections for the BFI at the earliest opportunity, as noted in a letter signed by World Boxing president Boris van der Vorst.
This Interim Committee is being formed to ensure administrative continuity and protect the rights and interests of Indian boxers until elections can be held and a new democratic executive committee is elected,” the letter stated.
“World Boxing will collaborate with the Interim Committee on operational and governance matters relevant to India and will provide support and oversight during this transitional period. We are hopeful that the situation in Indian boxing can improve swiftly with the necessary actions and that India will continue to be a strong partner of World Boxing moving forward,” it further added.
The international body also mentioned that the interim committee is required to submit its first report to World Boxing within 30 days of the letter's issuance, detailing the actions taken, processes followed, and the roadmap moving forward.
