Are 2,870 Public Water Testing Labs Currently Operational Across States?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Feb 9 (NationPress) A total of 2,870 water quality testing laboratories are in operation by government bodies at various levels including state, regional, district, sub-division, and block levels, in addition to mobile units and laboratories within Water Treatment Plants (WTPs), as reported by the Ministry of Jal Shakti to the Rajya Sabha on Monday.
Furthermore, there are 1,707 accredited and recognized laboratories that perform water quality assessments, as stated by Minister of State (MoS) V. Somanna in a written response.
To promote water quality testing among rural communities, the states/Union Territories (UTs) have been urged to allow the public to access water testing services at a minimal cost.
In collaboration with various stakeholders, the 'Concise Handbook for Monitoring Water Quality of Piped Drinking Water Supply to Rural Households' was published in December 2024, providing guidance for states/UTs, MoS Somanna mentioned.
As part of the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM), an online portal known as JJM-Water Quality Management Information System (JJM-WQMIS) has been established to assist states/UTs in testing water samples, alongside the processes of collection, reporting, monitoring, and surveillance of drinking water quality.
States/UTs are also encouraged to assess their current network of drinking water quality testing labs and enhance it by exploring Public-Private Partnerships for additional facilities at various levels.
The MoS emphasized the importance of having states/UTs ensure their water quality testing laboratories are accredited or recognized to maintain the reliability, accuracy, and credibility of the data generated.
He also noted that meetings with states/UTs and accreditation bodies were conducted to address issues such as a lack of assessors or delays in obtaining accreditation slots.
To augment public awareness, a 'Citizen Corner' has been incorporated into the JJM Dashboard.
This 'Citizen Corner' features the display of water quality test results at the village level, aimed at fostering awareness and building trust among the public regarding the quality of water supplied through the Public Water System in rural areas.
