Hyderabad, Dec 14 (NationPress) More than 850 individuals have been apprehended for operating vehicles while under the influence of alcohol during a targeted weekend operation within the jurisdictions of Hyderabad and Cyberabad Police Commissionerates, as reported by police on Sunday.

During this two-day initiative, 460 drivers were detained in Hyderabad, while the Cyberabad traffic police apprehended 407 offenders.

The Hyderabad traffic police executed a special crackdown on December 12 and 13 to promote road safety. In total, 460 drivers were caught driving while intoxicated.

Among those caught, 350 were riding two-wheelers, 25 were three-wheeler operators, and 85 were behind the wheel of four-wheelers and other vehicles.

Offenders were classified according to their Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) levels. There were 98 offenders with BAC levels ranging from 35 mg/100 ml to 50 mg/100 ml.

The police filed 185 cases for BAC levels from 51 to 100. Additionally, 91 cases were recorded for BAC levels between 101-150, and 48 cases for BAC levels ranging from 151-200.

Furthermore, sixteen offenders had BAC readings from 201 to 250, ten recorded levels of 251-300, and four cases were noted for BAC levels exceeding 300.

Law enforcement stated that there will be a zero tolerance policy towards drunk driving violations, and the special drive will persist. Commuters are urged to cooperate with traffic authorities.

Cyberabad's traffic police carried out a dedicated enforcement operation against drunk driving over the weekend, resulting in the capture of 407 offenders.

A breakdown reveals that 290 offenders were riding two-wheelers, eighteen were three-wheeler drivers, 90 were operating four-wheelers, and nine were in charge of heavy vehicles.

The police indicated that 354 offenders had BAC levels from 35 mg/100 ml to 200 mg/100 ml, 31 offenders had BAC levels from 201 mg/100 ml to 300 mg/100 ml, and 22 offenders recorded BAC levels from 301 mg/100 ml to 550 mg/100 ml.

Within the previous week (December 8-13), a total of 385 drunk driving cases were resolved in courts. Sixteen individuals faced jail time and fines, 21 were instructed to pay fines and perform community service while 348 others were fined.

The Cyberabad Police emphasized that driving under the influence of alcohol is a grave offense. Anyone driving while intoxicated and causing a fatal accident will face charges under Section 105 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023 (Culpable Homicide Not Amounting to Murder), which carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison along with fines.
