Hyderabad, Jan 1 (NationPress) A total of 2,731 individuals were apprehended for operating vehicles while intoxicated during the New Year festivities across three police commissionerates in Greater Hyderabad. In a dedicated operation conducted by law enforcement during the night of December 31 to January 1, 1,198 drunk driving cases were recorded within the Hyderabad commissionerate limits.
In Cyberabad, 928 cases were reported, while Rachakonda had 605 motorists caught in violation.
The Hyderabad traffic police implemented a specialized enforcement initiative against drunken driving from 7 p.m. to 3 a.m. to enhance road safety and avert traffic accidents.
The main goal of this initiative was to ensure that travelers arrive at their destinations securely, discourage drunken driving, and reduce the chances of both fatal and non-fatal road incidents during the New Year celebrations.
Hyderabad’s Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic), R. Venkateshwarlu, stated that the aim was to usher in the New Year without any accidents, thus allowing citizens to celebrate in a responsible and safe manner.
Out of the 1,198 cases recorded, 1,042 involved two-wheeler riders, 51 were three-wheeler operators, and 105 were drivers of four-wheelers and other vehicles.
Offenders were classified based on their Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) levels. There were 175 offenders with BAC levels between 35 mg/100 ml and 50 mg/100 ml.
The police documented 468 cases for BAC levels between 51-100, 293 cases for 101-150, and 163 cases for 151-200.
Authorities indicated that 51 offenders had BAC levels between 201-250, and 31 offenders ranged from 251-300.
Furthermore, seventeen cases were recorded for BAC levels exceeding 300 mg/100 ml.
The Joint Commissioner emphasized that there will be a zero tolerance policy regarding drunken driving, and this enforcement drive will persist. He called upon commuters to work in cooperation with the Hyderabad traffic police.
Meanwhile, Hyderabad Police Commissioner V.C. Sajjanar expressed gratitude to the public for an incident-free New Year celebration. He shared on ‘X’ that robust enforcement, effective awareness campaigns, and public cooperation led to a zero incident record concerning drunk driving.
“This didn’t happen by chance. Awareness worked, responsibility won, and your cooperation made the difference. Let’s continue to collaborate to make Hyderabad a much safer and genuinely global city,” he stated.
The Commissioner also commended all officers for successfully managing New Year’s Eve operations and strictly enforcing drunk-driving regulations.
