Why is Akhilesh Yadav Demanding Transparency in UP's SIR Exercise?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Dec 5 (NationPress) Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav has called for increased transparency and accountability regarding the ongoing Special Summary Revision (SIR) of voter lists in Uttar Pradesh, expressing concerns about alleged irregularities and inappropriate pressure on officials.
In a comprehensive post on X, Yadav laid out several direct demands aimed at ensuring the process is fair, unbiased, and free of political interference.
“Immediate demand on SIR: The statistics regarding the percentage of SIR completed in UP should be made public today. Eradicate any life-threatening pressure on BLO and allocate additional authorized personnel to this task within the designated timeframe. Ensure that the ruling party's affiliates and their associates are not involved in this process through backdoor methods now or in the future,” Yadav stated in a post on X.
“A thorough investigation is needed into how many individuals from the PDA community in each assembly constituency are being plotted for removal from the voter list, and this must be halted at all costs,” he further insisted.
The SP chief, alongside leaders from the INDIA coalition, has been vocally critical of the SIR exercise, citing alleged attempts to disenfranchise marginalized and disadvantaged voters. He has also urged party workers to identify and prevent any irregularities in the 'electoral roll purification' drive to ensure that no legitimate voter is excluded from the list.
On November 27, he completed his own SIR form and shared a photograph on X, urging citizens to do the same. He encouraged those facing challenges to contact the party's 'PDA Prahari' teams, which assist citizens in navigating the voter verification process.
Recently, Yadav has met with families of BLOs who passed away, underscoring the dangers faced by officials involved in the SIR process.
During a press conference in Lucknow earlier on Saturday, he presented a cheque of Rs 2 lakh to the family of one such BLO, demonstrating the party’s concern for officials working under challenging conditions.
Questioning the Election Commission’s haste in executing the SIR while elections are still two years away, Yadav accused the poll body of operating in a manner that favors the BJP.
Despite political strains within the INDIA coalition in Bihar, he reaffirmed that the alliance remains steadfast in Uttar Pradesh. The remarks from the Samajwadi Party chief highlight the increasing political scrutiny surrounding voter verification in the state and the critical need for transparency in this process.
