Anna University Sexual Assault Incident: BJP Claims Accused is Linked to DMK's Student Organization

Chennai, Dec 26 (NationPress) The President of the Tamil Nadu BJP, K. Annamalai, has asserted that Gnanasekaran, who operates as a biryani vendor and was recently arrested in the Anna University sexual assault case, is a habitual offender and serves as the deputy organiser of the DMK’s Saidai East student faction.
The BJP leader shared images of Gnanasekaran alongside prominent DMK figures, including Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin, who is the son of Chief Minister MK Stalin.
In a statement on the social media platform X, Annamalai wrote:
“It has come to light that Gnanasekaran, who was taken into custody regarding the case of a student being sexually assaulted at Anna University, has a history of involvement in similar offenses and is the deputy organiser of the DMK’s Saidai East student wing.”
He further claimed that a clear trend has been observed in such criminal incidents throughout Tamil Nadu.
Annamalai stated, “A criminal aligns with the DMK and grows close to its local leaders. Legal actions against him are overlooked, leading to his release without being marked as a criminal or monitored by the police.”
He continued, “Due to the influences of local DMK leaders and ministers, law enforcement fails to pursue investigations, allowing the perpetrator to commit further crimes.”
The BJP leader also mentioned that the innocent public is enduring the consequences of such practices.
Annamalai remarked, “This brutality has now impacted an innocent student because a person linked to 15 prior sexual offenses was left unchecked. The DMK government bears full accountability for this,” he alleged.
He challenged, “How long will the citizens of Tamil Nadu accept this condition? Is there a provision here that safeguards criminals if they are affiliated with the ruling party? Chief Minister M. K. Stalin must respond to the public. #ShameOnYouStalin.”
The incident took place on December 23, where a 19-year-old student from Anna University was sexually assaulted, and her male companion was attacked by two unidentified individuals on campus. The victim filed a police report on December 26.
In response to Annamalai’s accusations, Tamil Nadu Law Minister S. Regupathi denied any connection between the accused and the DMK. He clarified:
“The individual involved in this incident is not even a primary member of the DMK. Regarding the image with Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin, it is clear that it was a random snapshot taken in public. Such occurrences cannot always be averted.”
The minister also underscored the prompt action taken by the police, noting that the suspect was apprehended within five to six hours of the complaint. “This demonstrates that the government has nothing to conceal,” he asserted.
Meanwhile, the AIADMK, the primary opposition party in Tamil Nadu, also criticized the ruling DMK. Party General Secretary and former Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami (EPS) accused the DMK of harboring anti-social elements.
“The DMK is a hub of anti-social elements who are undermining society and engaging in criminal activities,” EPS stated, condemning the ruling party over the incident.
