New Delhi, Feb 13 (NationPress) In response to the recent results of the Bangladesh parliamentary elections, Congress MP Sukhdeo Bhagat expressed his hope that the security of minorities will be managed efficiently. Speaking to IANS, Bhagat stated, “Firstly, I wish them well, and we trust that the government will be responsive and meet the expectations of the populace. Above all, our sincere wish is for the protection of minorities and all associated matters to be dealt with effectively.”
BJP leader Dilip Ghosh shared a positive outlook regarding the country's future, asserting, “Peace will return to Bangladesh shortly, and the nation will advance once more on the trajectory of development.”
The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and its coalition claimed a significant victory in the 13th parliamentary elections, as reported by local media referencing unofficial results. The BNP-led coalition has secured 210 seats, setting the stage for a new government led by the party.
According to sources from the party, the Bangladeshi daily Jugantor indicated that Tarique Rahman, the BNP chairman, is poised to become Prime Minister, marking the return of a male Prime Minister to Bangladesh after nearly 35 years.
Unofficial results from the Dhaka-17 constituency revealed Tarique receiving 72,699 votes, surpassing his nearest opponent, S.M. Khaliduzzaman from Jamaat-e-Islami, who garnered 68,300 votes, as per Prothom Alo. Additionally, he triumphed in the Bogra-6 constituency with 216,284 votes, defeating Jamaat candidate Abidur Rahman Sohel, who received 97,626 votes.
Earlier, Tarique expressed optimism after casting his ballot, declaring he was “100 per cent hopeful” for victory. He took the reins of the BNP following the passing of his mother, former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, last December. Tarique is also the son of former President Ziaur Rahman, the BNP's founder.
With the unofficial results, Tarique Rahman is now on the brink of leading the nation as Prime Minister, as the BNP gears up to form its new government.
