Imphal, April 20 (NationPress) Five Bangladeshi nationals, comprising three women, were apprehended within the last 24 hours in Tripura for illegally entering India from across the border, according to officials on Sunday.
In a separate incident, villagers at Nandalal Das Para in the Simna Assembly constituency of West Tripura district detained two Bangladeshi thieves on Sunday.
Despite the presence of the Border Security Force (BSF), locals claim that Bangladeshi thieves manage to breach the fencing and cross over easily.
The Government Railway Police (GRP), along with the Railway Police Force (RPF) and BSF, arrested an additional five Bangladeshi nationals, including three women, at Agartala Railway Station in the past 24 hours.
GRP Station In-charge Tapash Das stated that a joint operation was conducted with the RPF and BSF that led to the apprehension of the Bangladeshi nationals.
They had entered Indian territory by crossing the border illegally.
During questioning, the Bangladeshi citizens admitted that they intended to travel to Kolkata from Agartala Railway Station and then proceed to Bangalore or Chennai.
“Cases have been filed at the Agartala GRP station against them under the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS), Indian Passport Act, Foreigners Act, and other applicable laws,” Das mentioned.
Authorities recovered three smartphones, Indian currency notes, and Bangladeshi voter ID cards from the detained individuals.
One of the women claimed during interrogation that a Bangladeshi human trafficker had promised her a job at a beauty parlour in Bengaluru, while the other two stated they were promised employment at juice bars in Chennai.
In accordance with directives from the Central government, vigilance along the India-Bangladesh border has been increased to curb illegal immigration, cross-border crimes, and movements by anti-national elements.
A BSF spokesperson indicated that the paramilitary forces have stepped up surveillance and intensified their presence along the International Border since violence erupted in Bangladesh in June-July last year, particularly after the collapse of the former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina-led Awami League government on August 5, 2024.
