Is this the start of a new democratic era in Bastar?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Jan 26 (NationPress) A long-anticipated celebration of democracy unfolded on Monday in the Bastar region of Chhattisgarh, an area long affected by Left-wing extremism. In a momentous event, 47 villages across the districts of Bijapur, Narayanpur, and Sukma—where national festivities were previously uncelebrated—marked their first observance of Republic Day on January 26. This occasion signifies a pivotal moment in the ongoing journey of democratic restoration and social transformation in Bastar.
As reported by Chhattisgarh Sadan, the security landscape in the region has significantly improved over the last two years, thanks to a well-coordinated approach by both the Central and state governments, ongoing anti-Maoist operations by security forces, and enhanced collaboration from local communities.
To bolster these efforts, 59 new security camps have been set up in Maoist-affected regions, establishing a constant administrative and security presence. Last year, Republic Day was celebrated in 53 villages, and this year, an additional 47 have joined this democratic tradition.
For the first time, the Tricolour was hoisted in these villages, with local residents actively participating in the Republic Day festivities. Areas once deemed sensitive and unapproachable for national celebrations saw villagers stepping forward to engage in democratic activities, showcasing their growing trust in governance and the rule of law.
Currently, more than 100 security camps operate across the Bastar region. Beyond enhancing security, their presence has facilitated the initiation of development projects. Basic amenities such as roads, schools, healthcare services, communication networks, and banking services are progressively reaching remote and previously overlooked villages. A notable example of this positive change is the recent resumption of banking services in the Maoist-impacted Jagargunda area.
Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai has stated that Bastar is gradually moving out from the influence of violence and becoming part of the mainstream development narrative. Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the guidance of Union Home Minister Amit Shah, the Chhattisgarh government is persistently working to reinforce peace, trust, and democratic principles in the region.
The Tricolour raised in these 47 villages on January 26 serves as a profound symbol of peace, democracy, and a fresh start for Bastar.
