The Suvendu Adhikari-led West Bengal government on Wednesday, 10 June announced the final portfolio distribution for its newly sworn-in cabinet, with Chief Minister Adhikari retaining several high-stakes departments and journalist-turned-politician Swapan Dasgupta taking charge of the critical Finance portfolio.

Chief Minister Retains Key Departments

Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has kept with himself the Home and Hills Department, Land & Land Reforms, Refugee Relief & Rehabilitation, Power, Information and Cultural Affairs, and Personnel and Administrative Reforms, among all departments not specifically allotted to other ministers. The consolidation of these portfolios under the Chief Minister signals a centralised governance approach in the new dispensation.

Cabinet Portfolios at a Glance

Former journalist and Rajya Sabha member Swapan Dasgupta has been allotted the Finance department, marking a significant appointment for a politician with no prior ministerial experience. Fellow scribe-turned-politician Jagannath Chattopadhyay has been assigned Higher Education, Technical Education, Training and Skills Development.

Veteran party leader Tapas Roy — who brings legislative and ministerial experience from the previous Mamata Banerjee-led government — has been entrusted with Industry, Commerce and Enterprises, Public Enterprises, Industrial Reconstruction, and Non-Conventional and Renewable Energy Sources. Medical practitioner Dr Sharadwat Mukherjee takes charge of Health & Family Welfare.

Senior legislator Dipak Burman will head School Education, Housing, and Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises and Textiles. Shankar Ghosh, a two-time legislator and former BJP chief whip in the West Bengal Assembly, has been given the twin portfolios of Parliamentary Affairs and Tourism.

Fashion designer-turned-politician Agnimitra Paul has been appointed cabinet minister for Urban Development & Municipal Affairs. Manoj Kumar Oraon takes Forests and Environment; Arjun Singh gets Labour and Transport; Gouri Shankar Ghosh is assigned Backward Classes Welfare, Mass Education Extension, and Library Services.

Kalyan Chakraborti has been entrusted with Information Technology & Electronics, Science, Technology & Biotechnology, Food Processing Industries, and Horticulture. Arup Kumar Das takes Irrigation & Waterways, while Dudh Kumar Mondal heads the Agriculture department. Ajay Kumar Poddar has been given Public Health Engineering and Public Works. Nishith Pramanik holds additional charge of Water Resources Investigation and Development.

Ministers of State (Independent Charge)

Three ministers of state with independent charge were also announced: Malati Ravo Roy for Women & Child Development, Social Welfare, Self Help Groups & Self Employment, and Programme Monitoring; Rajesh Mahata for Animal Resources Development and Fisheries; and Dr Indranil Khan for Youth Services, Sports, and Consumer Affairs.

The state government additionally notified portfolios for 19 ministers of state, including Joel Murmu, Hare Krishna Bera, Anandamay Barman, Ashok Dinda, Nadiar Chand Bauri, Vishal Lama, Shantanu Pramanik, Moumita Biswas Mishra, Umesh Ray, Purnima Chakravarty, Kaushik Chowdhury, Bhaskar Bhattacharya, Dibakar Gharami, Amiya Kisku, Kalita Majhi, Gargi Das Ghosh, Biraj Biswas, Dipankar Jana, and Sumana Sarkar. With the full cabinet now in place, the Adhikari government is set to begin its formal legislative and administrative work in the state.
