Why is BJP Protesting Against Kejriwal's Dog-Counting Claim?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Jan 6 (NationPress) On Tuesday, the BJP-led government in Delhi organized a protest outside the Delhi Assembly, vehemently criticizing AAP leader and former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal for his comments suggesting that government school teachers were assigned to count stray dogs.
This marked the second day of the Winter Session of the Delhi Legislative Assembly, which saw protests from both the BJP and the Aam Aadmi Party over various matters.
The ruling BJP party focused its ire on the opposition regarding Kejriwal's dog-counting claims, while AAP continued its criticisms of the Rekha Gupta government concerning air pollution issues in the city.
In a press conference, Delhi's Education Minister sharply rebuked Kejriwal's statements, labeling them as misleading and accusing the former Chief Minister of disseminating “incorrect information” regarding teachers counting stray dogs.
The minister called for a public apology from Kejriwal, asserting that such statements “distort facts” and “erode” public trust.
He further clarified that there was no government directive instructing teachers to engage in dog-counting and expressed disappointment that Kejriwal, despite his experience, was misrepresenting the situation.
Minister Ashish Sood accused AAP of engaging in “shoot-and-scoot” politics by making unverified claims and then retreating, stating, “We will not permit the irresponsible behavior of Arvind Kejriwal… making false statements and escaping.”
BJP MLAs gathered outside the Delhi Assembly, holding banners and shouting slogans against Kejriwal, demanding an apology for his statements.
BJP MLA Harish Khurana claimed that AAP and Kejriwal were “insulting” teachers and “misleading” the public of Delhi by propagating what he described as “false claims” about teacher deployment for dog counting.
“This is a blatant lie. BJP MLAs call for an immediate apology, both in the House and to the nation. Hence, we conducted this protest,” he informed IANS.
Another BJP MLA, Ravi Negi, remarked to IANS that some AAP leaders circulated a false order claiming that teachers would count dogs, while the government never issued such an order. “They are misleading the public and insulting teachers. This protest will persist until an apology is given. Today, the entire city of Delhi feels humiliated as both the populace and teachers have been insulted,” he asserted.
BJP MLA Anil Goyal also stated that Kejriwal and Sanjay Singh consistently “spread misinformation” in Delhi, labeling their remarks as “false”.
“No such circular was ever released. We are protesting against this and demanding that Arvind Kejriwal apologize to the public and to teachers. Sanjay Singh and AAP must also apologize,” he told IANS.
Moreover, BJP MLA Sanjay Goyal criticized the AAP chief, stating, “Arvind Kejriwal's so-called politics of lies and the manner in which teachers are insulted is unacceptable, and he must apologize. Sanjay Singh should also apologize. The people have already rejected them in Delhi and will do so in Punjab as well. Calling the deployment of teachers a task like counting dogs is shameful and deeply insulting.”
In the meantime, police have lodged an FIR following a complaint from the Directorate of Education.
The case pertains to the dissemination of false and misleading information on social media suggesting that teachers from Delhi government schools were tasked with counting stray dogs.
Investigations into the matter are ongoing.
