New Delhi, April 14 (NationPress) As the nation commemorates the 135th birth anniversary of Baba Saheb Ambedkar, the principal architect of India’s Constitution, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has intensified its critique of the Congress party and its past administrations. The BJP accuses them of not only belittling his contributions but also plotting to obliterate his legacy.
On Monday, the BJP unveiled two dramatized videos that reenact the political events of that time, illustrating the series of humiliations faced by Dr. Ambedkar under the leadership of then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru.
The BJP asserts that Baba Saheb was compelled to resign from Nehru’s cabinet due to his outspoken criticism of the government’s treatment of scheduled castes and scheduled tribes.
During his resignation speech in Parliament, Dr. Ambedkar delivered a scathing critique of the Nehru administration. He questioned, “Are only Muslims entitled to special privileges? Why should the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes not receive the same level of security? I cannot remain part of such a government,” as he exited the Union cabinet, according to the video.
Another pivotal moment was when the then Prime Minister actively campaigned against Dr. Ambedkar, highlighting how the Bharat Ratna was treated with disrespect by the Congress party. The dramatizations shared in the video suggest that a former aide of Bala Saheb was allegedly supported by Jawaharlal Nehru to contest against and ultimately defeat him in the elections.
In the first Lok Sabha elections of 1951–52, Dr. B. R. Ambedkar ran for the Mumbai North Central constituency as a candidate for the Scheduled Castes Federation. He lost to Narayan Sadoba Kajrolkar, a Congress candidate and once Ambedkar’s personal assistant, by a margin of around 15,000 votes. It was Prime Minister Nehru who campaigned against Dr. Ambedkar, making it a prestigious matter to secure his defeat.
After this electoral setback, Babasaheb participated in the Bhandara by-election in Maharashtra in 1954, where he again faced defeat, this time to Congress candidate Bhaurao Borkar, losing by approximately 8,500 votes.
The BJP contends that the Nehru government and Congress party took intentional actions to undermine Dr. Ambedkar’s contributions and guarantee his political defeats and marginalization.
“The citizens of this nation will never forget the insults and affronts suffered by the architect of our Constitution,” it stated.
