Patna, June 14 (NationPress) A significant political uproar emerged on Saturday following the circulation of a video allegedly depicting Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) chief Lalu Prasad Yadav with a portrait of Dr B.R. Ambedkar positioned near his feet during his birthday festivities, which gained traction on social media.
Senior BJP figure and former Union Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad expressed strong disapproval of the incident, accusing Lalu of showing disrespect towards the architect of the Indian Constitution.
“The manner in which Babasaheb Ambedkar’s portrait was positioned near Lalu Yadav’s feet is profoundly disrespectful. Ambedkar is the creator of our Constitution and a beacon of social justice. This behavior exemplifies a feudal ‘darbari culture.’ Moreover, Lalu was seen slicing a cake with a sword,” Ravi Shankar remarked while addressing the media in Patna.
The viral footage seemingly shows Lalu seated with one leg resting on a chair as an aide sets Ambedkar’s framed image on the ground close by, presumably for a photo or video.
BJP MP Dr Sanjay Jaiswal also criticized the RJD leader, claiming it was an affront to the Dalit community. “Lalu Yadav must offer an apology. If he fails to do so, the government should take legal measures. Those who profess to uphold the Constitution shouldn’t belittle its author,” he asserted.
JDU spokesperson Rajiv Ranjan Prasad mirrored the discontent, labeling it an act of hypocrisy. “RJD advocates for caste census and social justice, yet neglects to show fundamental respect to Dr Ambedkar. The photograph was near Lalu’s knees, and he didn’t even acknowledge it,” he stated.
Sources indicate that the viral video might be a montage of distinct clips—one featuring the photograph and another capturing the cake-cutting—potentially from various locations.
The RJD has yet to provide an official statement, although insiders within the party hint that a clarification regarding the controversy may be forthcoming.
