Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, March 19 (NationPress) The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has unveiled its initial roster of candidates for the forthcoming Assam Assembly elections, revealing nominees for 88 constituencies throughout the state.
This list was determined during a session of the party's Central Election Committee, led by the party's senior leadership.
Among the notable candidates is Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who will be contesting from Jalukbari, a constituency he currently oversees and is recognized as a BJP stronghold.
Additionally, Senior Minister Chandramohan Patowary will run from Tihu, while state Finance Minister Ajanta Neog will seek reelection from her previous seat, Golaghat.
In significant urban areas, the BJP has nominated Pradyut Bordoloi for Dispur, Diplu Ranjan Sarmah for New Guwahati, and Vijay Kumar Gupta for Guwahati Central, demonstrating a robust strategy to maintain its influence in these critical regions.
Importantly, Bordoloi transitioned to the BJP after severing longstanding ties with the Congress party just the day before in the national capital, and he has stepped down from his position representing the Nagaon Lok Sabha.
The party has also put forth candidates in Upper Assam's strongholds, including Dibrugarh, Tinsukia, Digboi, Doom Dooma, and Margherita.
Bhaskar Sharma is the candidate for Margherita, while Prasanta Phukan will compete in Dibrugarh and Suren Phukan will run from Digboi.
The BJP has also announced nominees for various constituencies in Central and Lower Assam, such as Rangia, Nalbari, Barhampur, Samaguri, and Nagaon.
In Barhampur, the party has selected Jitu Goswami, while Rupak Sarmah will contest from Nagaon-Batadraba.
For tribal and reserved constituencies, candidates have been announced for seats such as Boko-Chaygaon (ST), Tamulpur (ST), Dhemaji (ST), Majuli (ST), Bokajan (ST), and Diphu (ST), reflecting its ongoing engagement with indigenous communities.
This initial list showcases a blend of seasoned politicians and new entrants, as the party strives to fortify its electoral base across various regions.
Further candidate announcements are anticipated in the following days as the BJP finalizes its approach for the highly competitive Assembly elections.
