Chennai, Jan 9 (NationPress) marks a groundbreaking moment in the realm of Indian endurance sports as it prepares to host the nation's inaugural IRONMAN 5i50 Triathlon, coinciding with the launch of the DuYoska Duathlon on Sunday, January 11. Sponsored by the Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu (SDAT), this event positions India among a limited number of countries authorized to conduct the esteemed IRONMAN 5i50 format.
This event elevates India to the status of the third nation in Asia and the sixth worldwide to host the IRONMAN Group’s Olympic-distance 5i50 Triathlon, which includes a 1.5 km swim, a 40 km cycling segment, and a 10 km run, culminating in a total distance of 51.5 km.
The first edition has seen a remarkable turnout with 529 registered athletes, consisting of 83 female competitors, 17 international participants, and over 150 athletes from Tamil Nadu, showcasing a robust domestic presence alongside growing interest from abroad.
During a press conference, Deepak Raj, CEO of Yoska and Country Head of IRONMAN India, expressed his gratitude to the Tamil Nadu government for its unwavering support. “We are profoundly thankful to the Government of Tamil Nadu and SDAT for their invaluable assistance, which has been vital in bringing the IRONMAN 5i50 Triathlon to our state. Chennai is an exceptional venue, and we aim to make this an annual highlight, fostering growth in the years ahead,” he remarked.
The ceremony also unveiled the official finisher's medal and T-shirt for the IRONMAN 5i50 Chennai, attended by athletes and media personnel. Dignitaries included Thiru Satyabrata Sahu, IAS, Principal Secretary of the Government of Tamil Nadu, and Thiru Meghanatha Reddy, IAS, Member Secretary of SDAT.
In a pioneering move for Indian endurance sports, race day will also feature the DuYoska Duathlon, introducing the World Classic Duathlon Series to India. The duathlon categories encompass Sprint Duathlon (5 km Run, 20 km Cycle, 2.5 km Run), Olympic Duathlon (10 km Run, 40 km Cycle, 5 km Run), and Policybazaar IRONKIDS events across 1 km, 2 km, and 3 km for children aged 6 to 16 years.
Welcoming the event, Thiru Satyabrata Sahu stated, “We are thrilled that Chennai is hosting this momentous endurance sporting event, uniting national and international athletes on a global stage. I commend the organizing team and urge everyone to embrace the spirit of sportsmanship.”
Thiru Meghanatha Reddy emphasized that Chennai’s vibrant culture of cycling, running, and swimming was crucial in securing this event. “I extend my thanks to the Government of Tamil Nadu, particularly the Honourable Deputy Chief Minister, for recognizing this vision and providing steadfast support to make this event a reality,” he added.
The DuYoska Duathlon is set to commence at 6:00 AM at MGM Beach Resort, while the IRONMAN 5i50 Triathlon will kick off at 7:00 AM from Kovalam Beach.
