Chennai, Sep 5 (NationPress) The launch of India’s inaugural 5150 Triathlon took place in Chennai, initiated by Deputy Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Udhayanidhi Stalin, under the esteemed IRONMAN brand. The event is set for January 11 at the MGM Beach Resort on the East Coast Road.
This Chennai event enhances IRONMAN’s growing presence in India, following the successful introduction of IRONMAN 70.3 Goa in 2019, which has positioned Goa as the country's triathlon capital, attracting over 1,200 competitors from 50 different nations. Building on this robust foundation, IRONMAN India proudly presents the globally recognized 5150 Triathlon Series.
Deputy CM Udhayanidhi Stalin expressed, “By collaborating with IRONMAN India, SDAT is thrilled to bring a globally celebrated race format to our nation. This initiative will motivate thousands of athletes from diverse age groups and bolster the state’s standing as a top-tier destination for prestigious sporting events. With substantial government backing, we pledge to offer the necessary infrastructure and support to ensure the 5150 Triathlon Chennai is a resounding success.”
The 5150 Triathlon, first launched worldwide in 2011, is acclaimed as one of the most popular Olympic-distance formats, comprising a 1.5 km swim, 40 km cycle, and 10 km run. This event serves as a vital stepping stone for aspiring athletes looking to advance towards the esteemed IRONMAN 70.3 and Full-distance races.
In another significant development, the partnership also introduced the Duathlon Series to India, offering another globally recognized racing format for high-endurance athletes. Race categories include: Sprint Duathlon: 5 km Run, 20 km Cycle, 2.5 km Run, Olympic Duathlon: 10 km Run, 40 km Cycle, 5 km Run, and the IRONKIDS Chennai race (ages 6–16): 1 km, 2 km, and 3 km distances.
“With the debut of the 5150 Triathlon in Chennai, we are excited to expand the IRONMAN race portfolio in India, following four successful editions of IRONMAN 70.3 in Goa. This growth signifies more than just triathlon; it marks the initiation of a dedicated movement aimed at engaging and nurturing the running and cycling communities in the region. These races represent a perfect entry point for newcomers to endurance fitness while also providing a competitive venue for seasoned athletes seeking to challenge their limits.
The collaboration, formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding between Yoska and the Tamil Nadu Government, lays the groundwork for exceptional race experiences that will foster India’s endurance sports community and promote a vibrant fitness culture nationwide,” stated Deepak Raj, Country Head and Franchise Owner, IRONMAN India.
The event also unveiled the official logo of the 5150 Triathlon Chennai, presented by SDAT, in the presence of Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin, Athulya Mishra, Additional Chief Secretary, and J. Meghnatha Reddy, IAS, CEO/Member Secretary of SDAT, along with IRONMAN India leadership, Deepak Raj, and Aarathi Swaminathan, Deputy Race Director.
With the official launch now complete, Chennai is poised to welcome athletes from across the nation and beyond, marking a significant milestone on the national sporting calendar.
