Khajuraho, Dec 6 (NationPress) Tragedy struck as five individuals lost their lives when their vehicle collided head-on with a heavily-loaded truck on the road linking Sagar (Madhya Pradesh) to Kanpur (Uttar Pradesh) on Saturday.
The accident took place in Mungawari village, under the jurisdiction of Gulganj police station in Chhatarpur district.
The impact was so intense that five out of eight passengers in the car were killed instantly, while three others sustained critical injuries and were rushed to Chhatarpur district hospital.
The victims, all residents of Chhatarpur, were returning from a wedding celebration when the collision occurred between 3:30 a.m. and 4 a.m.
According to Gulganj SHO Guru Dutt Sesha, the car was heading towards Chhatarpur from Sagar when it struck a truck coming from the opposite direction.
The deceased have been identified as Mahendra Prajapati (30), Lakshman Prajapati (40), Deepak Prajapati (24), Surendra Prajapati (26), and Lalu Prajapati (17).
Among the critically injured are Bhupendra Prajapati and Jitendra Prajapati, who are currently being treated at a government hospital.
After initial care at Chhatarpur district hospital, they have been referred to Birla Hospital in Satna for further treatment.
When police arrived at the scene, they found the car utterly crushed and the occupants trapped inside. Local residents helped rescue the injured.
The driver of the truck fled the scene but was later apprehended after a search in the nearby forest early in the morning.
"The victims belonged to the same family and were returning from a wedding. A formal case has been filed, and an investigation is ongoing," stated the SHO.
Just last month, a similar incident resulted in four fatalities and one severe injury due to a head-on collision between two SUVs on the Bhopal-Vidisha highway, approximately 60 km from Madhya Pradesh's capital.
Local authorities are urging drivers to exercise caution while traveling on rural highways.
