Mandya, July 19 (NationPress) Karnataka's Deputy Chief Minister and state Congress leader D.K. Shivakumar had a close call when his escort vehicle flipped over on the Bengaluru-Mysuru Expressway this past Saturday.

Two personnel aboard the vehicle suffered mild injuries during the incident, which took place near TM Hosur in Gowdahalli, close to Srirangapatna in Karnataka's Mandya district.

The escort vehicle allegedly collided with a road divider before overturning.

Both injured parties have been taken to a hospital in Mysuru city.

Mandya Superintendent of Police Mallikarjun Baladandi confirmed that the mishap happened around 2:30 p.m.

The vehicle was part of a convoy traveling toward Bengaluru, following the conclusion of the Congress party's 'Sadhana Samavesha' event in Mysuru.

"It served as the front pilot vehicle. Due to rainfall, it slightly skidded and struck the divider. As it was moving at high speed, after hitting the median, it vaulted to the opposite side of the expressway. Luckily, no vehicles were passing through that area at the time, preventing a significant tragedy," he noted.

Following the incident, Deputy Chief Minister Shivakumar and the rest of the convoy halted for a brief moment.

Authorities swiftly arranged for an alternative vehicle for the affected personnel, he added.

The police have initiated an investigation into the occurrence.

In Mysuru, Shivakumar was involved in the laying of foundation stones and the inauguration of 56 projects valued at Rs 2,297.88 crore, along with the launch of 18 projects worth Rs 280.15 crore.

Karnataka's Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and AICC president Mallikarjun Kharge were also present at the event.

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah remarked that the 'Sadhana Samavesha' program was designed to counter the BJP's "misinformation" campaign.

Interestingly, in 2023, Shivakumar narrowly escaped an incident when a bird struck his helicopter, causing the glass to shatter.
