New Delhi, Sep 13 (NationPress) The Crime Branch of Delhi Police has successfully solved a shocking case of highway theft and robbery within just 48 hours, recovering 6,000 kg of stolen copper scrap valued at Rs 55 lakh and apprehending four individuals, including the truck driver who feigned being the victim, an official reported on Saturday.
The police registered the case (FIR No. 607/25) on September 10 at the New Usmanpur police station, following claims from driver Manish Kumar that he was robbed while transporting copper scrap from Libaspur to Madoli.
Kumar alleged that a car obstructed his truck near Signature Bridge, and its occupants, impersonating bank officials, forcibly entered the vehicle and administered a sedative.
Upon regaining consciousness at Jag Pravesh Hospital, Kumar discovered the cargo missing.
A team led by Inspector Pukhraj Singh, with oversight from ACP Ashok Sharma and DCP (Crime Branch) Harsh Indora, reviewed over 200 CCTV recordings and phone records.
During the interrogation, Kumar provided inconsistent statements and ultimately admitted to orchestrating the robbery with accomplices.
The arrested individuals include: Manish Kumar – the driver, identified as the principal conspirator, Aditya – Kumar’s friend from Bihar and co-conspirator, Arun Soni – a junk dealer from Kotla Vihar and mastermind who coordinated the logistics and disposal plan, and Ramzan – a resident of Gonda who administered the sedative to enhance the credibility of the fictitious robbery.
Items recovered include the complete copper shipment packed in 80 bags, the TATA-709 truck utilized in the crime, and the syringe used for the injection.
Police disclosed that Kumar, a habitual drinker from Azamgarh, UP, had lost multiple jobs and plotted the heist with Soni. Aditya, an unemployed graduate, and Ramzan, a drug addict, joined the scheme for quick financial gain.
“The prompt and effective investigation by the Crime Branch, NR-I, not only resulted in the apprehension of all individuals involved in this meticulously planned criminal conspiracy but also ensured the recovery of all stolen property. This operation showcases the commitment of Delhi Police towards public safety and the swift resolution of serious crimes,” stated DCP Harsh Indora.
