Mumbai, April 9 (NationPress) A heated debate has arisen regarding Maharashtra Congress councillor Fauzia Sheikh’s decision to abstain from singing ‘Vande Mataram’ during a session in Indore. Congress leader Husain Dalwai criticized this choice, labeling it as “absolutely wrong”, emphasizing that it is the national song and should be respected.

The controversy ignited when councillors Fauzia Sheikh Alim and Rubina Iqbal Khan opted not to participate in singing ‘Vande Mataram’ during a municipal budget meeting, citing their Islamic convictions.

In an interview with IANS, Husain Dalwai expressed, “It is absolutely wrong. These beliefs held by some members of the Muslim community are misguided. Historical figures, including Maulana Azad, have sung ‘Vande Mataram’. Many even faced imprisonment for doing so.”

He further stated, “While it’s inappropriate to insist on the complete six stanzas, as proposed by the BJP, it is acceptable to sing the first two stanzas. Not adhering to the national song is wrong. Conversely, those demanding the full version are also mistaken, as are those who categorically refuse to sing it.”

Earlier, NCP(SP) MP Fauzia Khan remarked that singing the national anthem conflicts with her religious principles. She stated, “If I were present, I too would refrain from singing it as it contradicts my religious beliefs. I would show my respect while adhering to the law.”

She highlighted that no individual, especially from a different faith, should be coerced into singing the song, as our Constitution safeguards religious freedom.

Additionally, on February 11, Husain Dalwai condemned the Central Government’s directive to mandate the performance of the entire six-stanza version of ‘Vande Mataram’ at official gatherings, describing this initiative as “forceful” and inconsistent with previous decisions regarding the recognition of the national song.
