New Delhi, April 19 (NationPress) - Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta vehemently criticized the Congress party and its allies on Sunday for their role in thwarting the women’s reservation bill. She expressed dismay at the parties seemingly 'celebrating' the setback for women as a democratic triumph.
During a press conference at the Delhi BJP office, CM Gupta stated, “Can democracy truly succeed while women face defeat? For years, they have exploited women for electoral gains, yet when the moment arrived to grant them their rightful place, they retreated.”
Aligning with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who labeled Congress as an anti-reform entity, Gupta remarked, “The Congress has consistently resisted transformation. They questioned initiatives such as ‘Operation Sindoor,’ opposed digital transactions, GST, CAA, Article 370, and the concept of one nation, one poll.”
She highlighted that the women’s quota bill has faced blockades for over thirty years, either being discarded or left unpassed in Parliament.
Gupta mentioned that the 'Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam' amendment bill was introduced by the government with the anticipation that the Opposition would support it as they did in 2023.
“However, the Opposition revealed their anti-women stance by voicing objections, citing technical matters such as north-south disparities, implementing the quota with the current Lok Sabha strength, or introducing a quota within a quota,” she noted.
She pointed out that while the Opposition had previously endorsed linking the women’s quota to delimitation in 2023, they have now reversed their position and are opposing the process.
