Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Feb 3 (NationPress) Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta announced on Tuesday that the thorough redevelopment of Old Delhi, along with the preservation of its rich heritage, will be prioritized.
This declaration came shortly after her appointment as chairperson of the Shahjahanabad Redevelopment Corporation (SRDC) by Lok Niwas.
The Chief Minister emphasized that her administration will focus on transforming Old Delhi into a vibrant tourism destination.
Upon taking office, Chief Minister Gupta remarked that restoring the historical and cultural significance of Old Delhi, the Walled City, is a fundamental promise of her administration.
“Shahjahanabad is not just a neighborhood but a living testament to Delhi’s rich historical and cultural heritage,” she stated, pinpointing the removal of overhead electrical wires in the narrow passages of Old Delhi as a primary objective.
She mentioned that these unsightly wires will be relocated underground to enhance safety and improve the area's aesthetic.
To tackle traffic congestion in crowded markets, a detailed traffic management strategy will be developed, said CM Gupta.
The government will also aim to establish multi-level parking facilities, she added.
The Chief Minister pointed out that Old Delhi is a historic residential zone where every street is a reflection of centuries of heritage.
Her government intends to ensure balanced development while protecting this legacy, and the restoration of historic havelis, katras, and koochas will also be prioritized.
She revealed that the SRDC had previously formulated various development plans, including the redevelopment of Chandni Chowk, the area around Jama Masjid, Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Marg, and the beautification of the roadway from Delhi Gate to Kashmere Gate. All these initiatives will be reassessed to elevate Old Delhi as a significant tourism hub.
The Chief Minister also expressed concern that Old Delhi has not achieved the necessary level of development and basic civic services in recent years.
The government will ensure consistent road construction, repair of streets, enhancement of the deteriorating sewer system, and a clear plan for the uninterrupted supply of drinking water, said CM Gupta.
Maintaining cleanliness and sanitation in Old Delhi remains among the government's top priorities, she added.
The Shahjahanabad Redevelopment Corporation (SRDC) was established on May 1, 2008, by the Delhi government as a Special Purpose Vehicle to facilitate coordination among various agencies, including the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, the Public Works Department, and the Tourism Department, to accelerate development projects.
The corporation also plays a vital role in conserving historic buildings, lanes, and heritage assets.
The SRDC’s jurisdiction mainly encompasses the area within the walled city of Old Delhi. Over the past few years, the corporation had been relatively dormant for various reasons; however, with its reorganization under the Chief Minister's leadership, Old Delhi’s development is anticipated to regain momentum and direction, as stated in an official announcement.
