Chennai, January 5 (NationPress) The Tamil Nadu Minister for Transport and Electricity, S.S. Sivasankar, vehemently criticized AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami on Monday, accusing him of disseminating “political theatrics and untruths” regarding the state government's prominent laptop distribution initiative.

Sivasankar announced that Chief Minister M.K. Stalin is set to inaugurate the 'World in Your Hands' scheme, which aims to provide laptops to 20 lakh college students, a part of the DMK government’s effort to prepare scholars for global competition.

He alleged that Palaniswami's attacks were motivated by “jealousy” over the success of the DMK government's welfare projects.

In response to Palaniswami’s recent remarks in Salem, Sivasankar stated that the AIADMK leader's claims of regaining power were out of touch with political reality, especially following a series of electoral losses since 2016.

Sivasankar highlighted that while Palaniswami often labels the DMK as a “corporate entity”, the AIADMK has acted like a “subordinate outfit” for an extended period.

Looking ahead to the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, he pointed out that the DMK-led coalition secured all 39 seats in Tamil Nadu and led in 221 of the 234 Assembly segments in the state.

He challenged Palaniswami’s claim of Salem being a secure AIADMK stronghold, noting the party’s failure to maintain its dominance in the parliamentary elections there.

Sivasankar also accused Palaniswami of spreading “blatant lies” regarding laptop distributions during his time in office. Referring to a Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) report presented in the Assembly in April 2023, he stated that over 60,000 laptops were acquired via ELCOT in 2017-18, yet only 8,791 were distributed. The inaction led to nearly 55,000 laptops remaining unused, resulting in a loss of ₹68.71 crore as their battery warranties expired.

Under the new initiative, students will receive laptops from renowned brands such as Dell, Acer, and HP, featuring Intel i3 or AMD Ryzen 3 processors, 8 GB RAM, 256 GB SSD, Windows 11, Linux OS, MS Office 365, and a six-month subscription to AI software.

Sivasankar, taking a jab at Palaniswami’s comments about alliances, remarked that during a rally in Pudukottai, Union Home Minister Amit Shah did not even mention Palaniswami’s name.

“This silence itself reveals the emptiness of claims about leadership,” the minister stated, adding that the unwavering public support for the DMK is what continues to unsettle the AIADMK leadership.

Point of View

It is crucial to recognize the ongoing rivalry between the DMK and AIADMK in Tamil Nadu. The recent statements from both sides reveal deeper political strategies at play, particularly as the state approaches the 2024 elections. Understanding these dynamics is essential for interpreting the future of governance and public welfare initiatives in the region.
