New Delhi, Nov 11 (NationPress) Former Australian cricketer Aaron Finch has recommended that the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), a three-time Indian Premier League (IPL) champion, refrain from investing Rs. 23.75 crore on Venkatesh Iyer. Instead, he suggested that the team consider releasing him and potentially repurchasing him at a more 'reasonable price' during the upcoming IPL 2026 auction.
Iyer topped the cost charts in KKR's IPL 2025 roster, followed closely by Rinku Singh, who was valued at Rs. 13 crore. Last year, the franchise ended the auction with a mere Rs. 0.05 crore left in their budget and is keen to generate some financial flexibility heading into the next auction.
During an interview on JioStar, Finch assessed KKR's decision to retain Venkatesh Iyer, stating, “Investing 23.75 crore in a player like Iyer is excessive, especially since he has often been placed in an unsuitable middle-order role without leveraging his bowling skills. Although Iyer has delivered remarkable performances for KKR, being their leading scorer in 2021 and contributing to their 2024 trophy win, his inconsistent position and hefty price tag seem misaligned. KKR should weigh the option of releasing him to free up resources and possibly reacquiring him at a price that reflects his current team role.”
Meanwhile, the Mumbai Indians showcased impressive performances last season, making a noteworthy comeback after losing their initial four matches, ultimately reaching the playoffs before facing elimination.
Former Australian cricketing legend Matthew Hayden opined that the Hardik Pandya-led team boasts a well-rounded lineup, yet they face challenging decisions regarding player retention and release.
On the topic of the team's retention strategy, Hayden remarked, “The Mumbai Indians possess a very balanced playing eleven, but tough choices lie ahead. Trent Boult excelled last season, taking 22 wickets and significantly impacting the powerplay. However, with his 12.5 crore price tag, management may contemplate releasing him to potentially bring him back at a lower cost. This strategy could allow them to allocate funds to strengthen other areas while retaining their core balance.”
The five-time champions, Chennai Super Kings, have been in the spotlight recently, as reports suggest they might trade their star all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja to the Rajasthan Royals in exchange for skipper and wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson.
As the retention deadline approaches, Subramaniam Badrinath assessed CSK's potential player releases, noting, “CSK is expected to let go of several Indian players. Ravichandran Ashwin is at the top of the list following his retirement, which would free up 9.5 crore. Other likely releases include Deepak Hooda, Vijay Shankar, and Rahul Tripathi, which could add another 10 crore to their budget. Rachin Ravindra may also be released, bringing their total available funds to around 25 crore, providing them with significant flexibility for the upcoming auction.
