West Bengal: Gang Rape of Widowed Teacher by Family and Neighbors
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, March 4 (NationPress) In a deeply disturbing incident that has shocked the community, a 28-year-old widowed educator has reportedly been gang-raped by her brother-in-law and two local residents at her in-laws' home in the Shantipur locality of West Bengal's Nadia district, according to police reports released on Wednesday.
The victim, who works as a school teacher, filed an official complaint at the Shantipur police station on March 2, accusing three individuals—her brother-in-law (devar) and two neighbors named Babla Sheikh and Sanatan Sarkar—of sexually assaulting her on February 28.
As detailed in the First Information Report (FIR) and the victim's account to law enforcement, the harrowing events unfolded following her husband's death in January of this year.
She stated that shortly after her husband's passing, her in-laws expelled her from their home. In her fight for her rights, she had been reaching out to various authorities and was preparing to file a petition in court.
On February 28, she received a call from her sister-in-law (nanad), who told her that the family would gather at her brother-in-law's house to discuss a settlement concerning financial matters and her claims.
Believing in the promise of a fair discussion, the victim went to her in-laws' residence in Shantipur. Upon her arrival, she discovered two local men, Babla Sheikh and Sanatan Sarkar, along with her in-laws already present.
The victim recounted the horrifying sequence of events to the police: "As soon as I entered the house, my sister-in-law locked the main door from the outside. Before I could comprehend the situation, my brother-in-law and the two neighbors, who had entered through the back door, assaulted me. They all took turns raping me," she stated in her complaint.
She explained that her sister-in-law eventually unlocked the door, likely due to her desperate screams. Seizing the opportunity, she managed to escape and return home.
In her FIR, the teacher specifically named three individuals: her brother-in-law (name withheld for victim protection), Babla Sheikh, and Sanatan Sarkar, as the perpetrators of the gang rape. Her sister-in-law has also been implicated for her alleged role in facilitating the crime by locking the door.
Police have confirmed that a case has been filed under the relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), and an investigation is in progress. However, as of Tuesday evening, no arrests had been made.
A police officer from Shantipur police station commented, "We have acknowledged the complaint and registered an FIR. The victim's statements have been documented. We are currently gathering evidence and conducting raids to apprehend the accused. The investigation is ongoing."
When reached for comment, one of the accused denied all allegations, claiming that there is a "political conspiracy" behind the complaint and asserting that they have been wrongfully implicated.
The incident has elicited responses from various political figures in the district. Debashis Gangopadhyay, President of the Ranaghat organizational district for the Trinamool Congress, condemned the act, stating, "The allegations of abuse against a widowed woman are appalling and deserve strong condemnation. We support her in her quest for justice and demand a thorough and timely investigation to ensure that the guilty are punished."
Aparna Nandi, President of the Ranaghat organizational district for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), also expressed her disapproval, saying, "What has occurred is tragic. Justice must prevail, and the guilty should face consequences. It is also essential to investigate if there is any political motive behind these accusations. A fair inquiry will uncover the truth."
Local sources indicated that the victim's husband had died in January, and there had been ongoing disputes between her and her in-laws regarding property and financial entitlements.
The police have assured that stringent action will be taken based on the investigation's outcomes.
