Indian Stock Market Plummets as Oil Price Fluctuations Impact Investor Confidence
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Mumbai, March 12 (NationPress) The Indian benchmark equity indices faced a significant drop on Thursday as fluctuations in global oil prices negatively impacted investor confidence, resulting in widespread selling across various sectors.
The Nifty index decreased by 0.95 percent, equating to a reduction of 227.70 points, closing at 23,639.15. The Sensex also experienced a decline of 1.08 percent, down by 829.29 points, finishing at 76,034.42.
Experts analyzing the Nifty's technical outlook noted that the critical demand zones on the downside are 23,500 and 23,000, bolstered by robust put open interest which may provide support in the near term.
“On the upside, immediate resistance is observed at 23,700, followed by 23,800, while 24,000 remains a strong supply zone for the index,” stated an analyst.
Automobile stocks in the Nifty50 index suffered notable losses during the session.
Mahindra & Mahindra, Eicher Motors, and Maruti Suzuki India were highlighted as the leading decliners.
Market sentiment was further swayed by events in West Asia and apprehensions regarding energy supply.
Reports indicate that India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar engaged in talks with his Iranian counterpart concerning maritime safety and India's energy security.
According to External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, the discussions emphasized ensuring safe passage for shipping routes.
Iran has reportedly provided assurances that Indian-flagged vessels would be allowed safe transit through the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial route for global oil transport.
Additionally, broader markets mirrored the downward trend seen in benchmark indices. The Nifty Midcap 100 index fell by 0.37 percent, while the Nifty Smallcap 100 index saw a decline of 0.69 percent during the trading session.
From a sectoral perspective, the Nifty Auto index was the worst performer, with declines attributed to concerns over gas supply restrictions and a broader shortage potentially affecting the automotive sector outlook. The Nifty FMCG and Nifty Realty indices also lagged behind.
Conversely, the Nifty Oil & Gas index stood out as the top-performing sector during Thursday's trading, buoyed by rising global crude oil prices.
Analysts pointed out that the volatility in oil markets and worries regarding global energy supplies continued to exert pressure on investor sentiment, leading to widespread declines in Indian equities.
Meanwhile, after hitting an all-time low, the Rupee managed to recover some value, supported by interventions from the central bank and a rebound in oil benchmarks. Although the rupee stabilized, the prevailing trend appears to be skewed towards further decline.
