Patna, Jan 29 (NationPress) Janata Dal-United (JD-U) MP Ajay Mandal has ignited a controversy after reportedly assaulting and abusing journalists Kunal Shekhar and Sumit Kumar while they were reporting a news story at Bhagalpur Airport on Wednesday.

The incident, which was recorded on video and has gone viral on social media, has led to strong condemnation from opposition parties and journalists' associations.

Witnesses claim the journalists were capturing footage of Ajay Mandal's vehicle entering Bhagalpur Airport, where arrangements were being made for Chief Minister Nitish Kumar's anticipated visit.

When the MP noticed them filming, he reportedly became enraged, pursued the reporters, and allegedly verbally abused and assaulted them.

As the situation intensified, both journalists were reportedly injured, leading local bystanders to transport them to Sadar Hospital, where they are receiving treatment.

In response to public outcry, Ajay Mandal, the JD-U MP from Bhagalpur, refuted the allegations, asserting that his remarks were aimed at his bodyguards, not the journalists.

"A man approached my vehicle and began banging on the windshield. My bodyguard pushed him back, but he retaliated, causing my constable to fall. A scuffle ensued, and I intervened to assist my bodyguard. I only directed my words at my bodyguard, not any journalist," Mandal explained.

However, his justification has raised additional concerns, with critics questioning: "Does an MP have the authority to abuse police personnel?"

Opposition parties, especially the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), have capitalized on the occurrence, denouncing it as an assault on press freedom and democracy.

RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav harshly criticized Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, accusing him of being silent on the increasing lawlessness in Bihar.

Journalists and civil rights groups have also called for stringent action against Ajay Mandal, contending that such events jeopardize the freedom of the press, often considered the ‘fourth pillar of democracy.’
