Ahmedabad, Jan 19 (NationPress) The Chief Minister of Gujarat, Bhupendra Patel, has sanctioned Rs 220 crore for the revamp of Kalupur Railway Station, which includes the upgrading of the Kalupur and Sarangpur railway overbridges. The initiative, in partnership with the Railway Land Development Authority, will total Rs 440 crore, with the state contributing 50% under the Swarnim Jayanti Mukhyamantri Urban Development Scheme.

Moreover, Rs 53 crore has been earmarked for a new bridge at the intersection on the Radhanpur-Bhilot road.

“This redevelopment reflects Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of 'Virasat Bhi, Vikas Bhi', which emphasizes improving the quality of life for citizens. The Kalupur railway overbridge, built in 1915, and the Sarangpur overbridge, constructed in 1940, will be upgraded to four-lane structures,” officials noted.

At present, the Kalupur overbridge, referred to as Manu Bhai Parmar Bridge, has three lanes with footpaths, while the Sarangpur overbridge has two lanes. These enhancements are designed to improve safety and extend the longevity of both structures.

Chief Minister Patel stated that the “funding reflects the government’s dedication to upgrading infrastructure and meeting the growing demands of the city.”

Established in 1866 during British colonial rule, Kalupur Railway Station, officially known as Ahmedabad Junction (ADI), was integral to the Bombay, Baroda, and Central India Railway (BB&CI) network. Situated near the city center, it has historically connected Ahmedabad to significant urban centers across India, bolstering the region’s thriving textile industry by enabling the transport of materials such as cotton and textiles.

The station, celebrated for its fusion of colonial and traditional architecture, has undergone numerous modernization phases, including platform expansions, electrification, and modern ticketing systems. Currently, with 12 platforms, it ranks among Gujarat’s busiest railway stations and plays a pivotal role in the state’s economic development.

It accommodates approximately 1.2 lakh passengers daily, although some estimates suggest numbers could soar to as high as 2.8 lakh passengers per day.
