Kangana Ranaut Clarifies ‘Emergency’ Is Not Politically Charged, Won’t Affect Voter Decisions

Mumbai, Jan 8 (NationPress) Actress-director Kangana Ranaut, who will play the role of former Prime Minister of India, Indira Gandhi in her forthcoming directorial project ‘Emergency’, has asserted that the film is not political in nature and will not impact voter decisions.
The actress recently engaged in a conversation with IANS regarding the film, elaborating on its narrative structure. The movie chronicles the 21-month period from 1975 to 1977 when Indira Gandhi declared a state of emergency throughout the nation, citing both internal and external threats.
Previously, ‘The Sabarmati Report’ received tax exemptions across all states. Will ‘Emergency’ enjoy similar treatment?
Kangana responded, “This is not a political film. It's a story. It has no connection to politics. It may seem odd right now, but ultimately, it is not affiliated with any political party. Viewers will leave feeling they’ve watched a film, not that they’ve been influenced in their voting choices. You’ll gain insight into that historical episode. If you watch ‘Argo’ in Hollywood, you don't leave contemplating your voting decisions; you simply become informed about a specific moment in history. If audiences approach it this way, they won't be let down. If they expect to determine their voting choices from it, then this is not the film for them.”
How have audiences and the content landscape evolved over the years?
The actress remarked to IANS, “There was a film, ‘Kissa Kursi Ka’, made about Mrs. Gandhi, which resulted in the director's suicide. That was a different era compared to today. People need to watch and comprehend what the actual situation was. Why did it happen? What occurred? What were the results? This presents a significant opportunity for understanding, and I believe audiences will turnout in substantial numbers to gain this insight.”
With an additional role as a Member of Parliament and being part of the BJP, with Delhi Elections approaching, will you campaign after ‘Emergency’?
Absolutely. The party frequently assigns me to campaign. They sent me during the Maharashtra Elections and will likely send me to Delhi as well. Even before joining the party, I was a supporter. When we share ideological beliefs, we don’t require a formal responsibility to promote them.”
‘Emergency’ is scheduled for release on January 17 in theaters.
