Thiruvananthapuram, Feb 26 (NationPress) Two days following the apprehension of a 23-year-old youth from Kerala for the brutal slaying of four family members and his 22-year-old girlfriend, investigators disclosed on Wednesday that Affan committed these heinous acts due to his father's escalating financial troubles.
Initially, Affan was uncooperative; however, he has now admitted that the murders stemmed from the distress and pressure associated with his father's increasing debts.
His father, Rahim, had a business venture in Saudi Arabia that incurred substantial losses, leading him to borrow significant sums of money, which deeply troubled Affan.
In a shocking spree that commenced around 10 a.m. on Monday and continued until approximately 5:30 p.m., Affan murdered his girlfriend, younger brother, grandmother, his father's sister, and her spouse, Lateef.
He also attempted to kill his mother, leaving her for dead, yet she miraculously survived the vicious hammer attack.
Doctors attending to Affan's mother reported on Wednesday that her condition is improving, and she has begun to ask questions.
Affan is currently hospitalized at the state-operated Medical College Hospital after he informed authorities post-surrender that he had ingested poison following the murders.
He is under police surveillance at the hospital, where he is now cooperating with the investigation team.
Although his health is stabilizing, authorities have yet to gather further statements from him, which may occur in the coming days.
Investigators have discovered that after killing his grandmother and taking her jewelry, Affan pawned it for approximately Rs 70,000, using the funds to settle a loan of Rs 40,000.
The police investigation revealed that Affan consumed alcohol on the day of the five murders and severely injured his mother.
The killing spree unfolded in his locality, covering three homes in Venjaramoodu, located on the outskirts of the capital city, over a distance of 25 km between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m.
Authorities recovered the hammer used by Affan to inflict fatal blows to the victims' heads on Tuesday.
Efforts are ongoing to facilitate Rahim's return to India from Saudi Arabia, where he is currently unable to travel due to issues with his documentation.
