Thiruvananthapuram, March 9 (NationPress) The Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the Kerala Police is set to question Shemi, the mother of Affan, the main suspect in the horrific murder of five individuals in Venjaramoodu, Thiruvananthapuram, on February 24.
This move follows Affan's assertion during questioning that his mother was the cause of the family's overwhelming debt amounting to Rs 65 lakh, which he claimed prompted his violent behavior.
As per police sources, the family faced a dire financial situation after 2021. Investigators believe that Shemi was instrumental in managing the financial matters, accruing significant debts from both relatives and local moneylenders.
Affan accused his mother of acquiring gold and property documents from family members to use as collateral at financial institutions. For nearly two and a half years, Shemi allegedly oversaw these financial transactions, prompting the police to explore the underlying reasons for the substantial loans.
The case took a more intricate turn when Affan's father, Abdul Rahim, who returned from the UAE post the murders, informed the police that he was only aware of a debt of Rs 15 lakh.
He denied his son's allegations, stating that he had never requested money from his family to support his business endeavors in the Middle East.
Shemi, the sole survivor of the attack, is presently receiving treatment at Gokulam Hospital in Thiruvananthapuram, recuperating from severe head injuries inflicted by her son.
On February 24, Affan initially assaulted his mother with a hammer, inflicting grave injuries, before confining her in a room. He then proceeded to his grandmother's residence, where he ruthlessly killed Salma Beevi, aged 88, by repeatedly smashing her head against a wall. His violent rampage continued as he attacked his uncle, Abdul Latheef (69), a former Kerala Police officer, and his aunt, Shajida (59), using the same weapon. He later deceived his fiancée, Farsana (22), into coming to his house, where he brutally murdered her as well. His final victim was his 14-year-old younger brother, Afsan.
The shocking nature of this crime has ignited widespread discussions across Kerala, with debates centering on whether violent Malayalam films influenced Affan’s actions. Many believe that the increasing depiction of extreme violence in cinema might have influenced his mindset.
As the investigation progresses, the SIT is focusing on uncovering the financial turmoil that may have led to this tragedy, while experts continue to examine the psychological and social factors surrounding one of the most shocking mass murders in the state's history.
