Kolkata Police Enhance Security for Dol Yatra and Holi Festivals
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, March 3 (NationPress) The police force in Kolkata has implemented comprehensive security measures throughout the city in anticipation of the dual celebrations of Dol Yatra and Holi, scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday.
The police have announced that a total of 398 police pickets will be strategically positioned across Kolkata on the day of Dol Yatra. Among these, 86 specialized pickets will be established at critical intersections and sensitive areas, such as Khanna More, Park Circus Seven-Point Crossing, Shyambazar, and other prominent junctions.
Each of the 86 specialized pickets will be staffed by six police officers, while the remaining 312 pickets will consist of three personnel each. The area with the highest density of pickets—totaling 72—will be in the Kolkata Port vicinity. Furthermore, 36 pickets each will be allocated to the South-East and South Suburban divisions.
To guarantee safety along the waterfront, teams from the Disaster Management Group (DMG) will be stationed at 24 ghats bordering the Hooghly River. Each division of Kolkata Police will also maintain a dedicated DMG team on alert.
As part of a city-wide monitoring strategy, 62 Police Control Room (PCR) vans will patrol various neighborhoods. Additionally, motorcycle patrol units will monitor narrow lanes and bylanes to deter any potential disturbances, mischief, or incidents of hooliganism during the celebrations.
The enhanced security measures are being implemented as the city prepares for the vibrant festival of colors and in light of the forthcoming state Assembly elections. Security has also been reinforced in areas with significant minority populations during the ongoing month of Ramzan.
In a concurrent initiative, Kolkata Police have ramped up efforts to ensure the safety of women. Five “Pink Booths”, staffed exclusively by female personnel and furnished with modern amenities, have been established across the city. Special patrol vehicles will operate during the night, with women police officers conducting patrols from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. to bolster security and instill confidence among local residents.
Officials have assured the public of their commitment to facilitating a peaceful and incident-free celebration of these festivals.
