Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, Dec 24 (NationPress) Extensive measures have been implemented by Kolkata Police to ensure safety during the Christmas and New Year celebrations, officials reported on Thursday.
The headquarters of the Kolkata Police has decided to station 1,500 police officers throughout the streets of Kolkata, with this deployment lasting until late Thursday evening.
A senior police official noted that the comprehensive security measures were designed not only to accommodate the expected large crowds but also to mitigate any potential spillover from the ongoing unrest in neighboring Bangladesh that could disrupt the festive atmosphere.
High-ranking police officials, including deputy commissioners, assistant commissioners, and inspectors, will be present on the streets in shifts from Wednesday evening until Thursday night.
The deployed forces will operate under direct oversight from police control rooms staffed by officers of the ranks of joint commissioners and additional commissioners.
As anticipated, the vibrant party hub of Park Street in central Kolkata and its surrounding areas will receive the majority of security resources. Similar security efforts will be in place at various churches throughout the city starting Wednesday evening.
An all-female unit from the city police will be on duty around the clock to prevent incidents of harassment and eve-teasing.
Four to five watchtowers have already been set up in the Park Street area. Quick Response Teams (QRTs) and Heavy Radio Flying Squads (HRFS) will also be active in Park Street from Wednesday evening until Thursday night.
In addition to Park Street, police personnel will also be stationed at the Zoological Garden in Alipore, Victoria Memorial, Indian Museum, Maidan, and other well-known tourist destinations.
"There will be a sufficient number of female police officers, undercover detectives, and tactical teams. Special surveillance and protection measures have been implemented at key churches in the city. Security checkpoints will be established at various entry points into the city," a senior police official stated.
In addition to police efforts, the state Disaster Management Department has prepared its teams for any emergencies. Trauma-care ambulances and life-saving disaster management teams will be deployed at river points in and around the city, while personnel from the River Traffic Police will conduct continuous patrols on the water using speedboats.
