Kolkata, Dec 21 (NationPress) In light of escalating tensions in neighboring Bangladesh, security measures have been enhanced across Kolkata to ensure prompt response to any potential unrest. Kolkata Police Commissioner Manoj Verma has emphasized that the violence occurring in Bangladesh should not spill over into Kolkata, as reported by police sources on Sunday.

The Commissioner addressed the monthly crime meeting of the Kolkata Police on Saturday, where the unrest in Bangladesh was a key topic of discussion.

Sources indicate that the Police Commissioner has made it clear that should any signs of unrest emerge in Kolkata as a result of the disturbances in Bangladesh, immediate measures must be implemented. In addition to maintaining heightened surveillance in sensitive areas under the jurisdiction of Kolkata Police, strict oversight has been mandated throughout the city, particularly in suburban police station regions.

These directives were issued following a review of intelligence reports.

"The commissioner has explicitly stated that police stations must stay alert and enhance monitoring. Any reports of disturbances must be addressed without delay. Sensitive locations are to receive special attention as part of these precautionary measures," a police source remarked.

The city's police chief's recommendations followed violent incidents in Bangladesh triggered by the death of a local youth leader.

On Friday, thousands of demonstrators filled the streets of Dhaka after the announcement of the death of Sharif Osman Hadi, 32. Authorities reported that several buildings, including those housing the country's two major newspapers, were set ablaze, with staff members trapped inside. Additionally, a Hindu man was brutally attacked, and his body was tied to a tree and set on fire.

This security alert coincides with the festive season in Kolkata, with Christmas and New Year celebrations approaching. The Commissioner has cautioned police stations to uphold law and order and ensure public safety during this period, as nightlife activities increase and streets become crowded. Police have been instructed to closely monitor situations to prevent any incidents of harassment or inappropriate behavior towards women.

Additionally, directives have been issued for rigorous action against intoxicated drivers. The Police Commissioner has instructed local police stations to carry out regular inspections and raids on hotels and guest houses.

Moreover, several recent fire incidents within the city were reviewed during the monthly meeting, sources revealed. Instructions have been provided to evaluate the licenses of warehouses storing flammable materials. Consequently, all police stations are tasked with gathering information regarding the number of such warehouses in their areas and the types of flammable substances stored. The Commissioner has mandated that appropriate actions be taken against any warehouse found to be in violation of regulations.
