Kolkata, Oct 20 (NationPress) The Kolkata Police have implemented enhanced security measures to protect the gold and silver jewellery adorning the idols of Goddess Kali in various puja mandaps throughout the city, according to a senior police official on Monday.

This year, the Kolkata Police will oversee the jewellery security in 48 mandaps citywide.

Officers and rifle-wielding police personnel will be tasked with safeguarding the jewellery. During Kali Puja, numerous community puja committees beautify the idols with exquisite gold and silver ornaments. In cases where an idol has minimal jewellery, puja organisers typically hire security guards for protection. However, those with significant jewellery collections have sought police support due to the valuables involved.

The sheer volume of jewellery across the 48 mandaps necessitates additional security. Hence, puja organisers have turned to the police for help, citing the high value of the jewellery.

In response, police presence has been established in these mandaps starting Monday morning. From the commencement of Kali Puja until the immersion, two constables equipped with rifles will maintain security in shifts, as stated by the police. Some officers are even drawn from the armed forces of the Kolkata Police.

"An assistant sub-inspector will also be present at certain mandaps. Puja organisers have been urged to monitor the jewellery with heightened vigilance. Many have opted for private security guards, and several have installed gates at their mandaps. Nevertheless, we have intensified police deployment as an extra layer of protection," remarked a senior officer of the Kolkata Police.

This year, Kolkata Police deployed two policemen with rifles at 11 Durga Puja mandaps, while more stringent security was arranged at two additional mandaps. Security measures were instituted for all 13 puja committees where substantial gold and silver jewellery was utilized for idol decoration.
