Has Telangana been shortchanged by the Union Budget again?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Hyderabad, Feb 1 (NationPress) BRS working president K.T. Rama Rao on Sunday accused that Telangana has once again been deprived of its rightful allocation in the recent Union Budget.
In response to the Union Budget 2026-27 unveiled by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in Parliament, he charged the BJP-led Central Government with maintaining a discriminatory stance towards the State for over a decade. He also questioned the Congress-led State government for failing to secure even minimal funding.
KTR remarked that Chief Minister Revanth Reddy’s nearly 60 visits to New Delhi resulted in “not a single rupee” for Telangana and demanded an explanation regarding the tangible benefits derived from these trips.
The BRS leader pointed out that the much-touted “big brother–little brother” partnership between Congress and BJP has not translated into financial advantages for Telangana, as illustrated by the current Budget.
KTR alleged that the Chief Minister’s visits to Delhi were politically motivated rather than serving the State’s interests, asserting that the Budget revealed the “total futility” of those engagements. He emphasized that Telangana was left with nothing while other States were granted significant allocations.
Turning his criticism towards BJP leadership, KTR lamented that even the party’s own MPs and Union Ministers from Telangana failed to advocate for the State in Parliament.
He highlighted that despite representation in the Union Cabinet, Telangana did not receive any substantial allocations, reflecting the Centre’s ongoing neglect since the State’s inception.
KTR recalled that numerous requests over the last decade for essential projects had been ignored. These included national status for the Palamuru–Ranga Reddy irrigation project, Metro Rail expansion, the Regional Ring Road, new railway lines, a coach factory at Warangal, the establishment of esteemed educational institutions like IIM, the Bayyaram steel plant in Khammam, and a mega textile park in Sircilla. None of these long-standing demands were included in the current Budget, he noted.
He also remarked that Telangana has been systematically ignored since its formation, including in the implementation of commitments made under the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act. The ongoing lack of Central support, he argued, reflects a pattern of discrimination rather than a mere oversight.
The BRS leader demanded that Congress and BJP MPs from Telangana, along with Union Ministers and the State Government, collectively account to the populace for what he termed a “serious injustice” in the Budget. Noting that neighboring States consistently receive substantial Central aid, KTR stated that the disparity was evident to the public.
KTR asserted that the latest Budget further demonstrates that national parties are either unwilling or incapable of protecting Telangana’s interests. He called upon Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, BJP Union Ministers, and MPs from both parties to publicly apologize for their failure to secure funds for the State.
Additionally, he criticized the Telangana BJP leadership for what he characterized as a lack of assertiveness in Parliament, emphasizing that despite an equal number of MPs from Congress and BJP, the State has “ended up with zero” in terms of tangible Budgetary benefits.
