Should Patna Be Renamed Pataliputra?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Patna, Feb 4 (NationPress) President of Rashtriya Lok Morcha (RLM), Upendra Kushwaha, on Wednesday, put forward a proposal to change the name of Patna, the capital of Bihar, back to Pataliputra, highlighting its significant historical importance during the Mauryan Empire.
He presented this request during the Motion of Thanks for President Droupadi Murmu's address in the Rajya Sabha.
While engaging in the discussion, Kushwaha called upon the Central government to restore the city's ancient name, emphasizing that Pataliputra was the prestigious capital of the Mauryan Empire and stands as a testament to India's rich heritage.
"Pataliputra was the capital of the Mauryan Empire, which we now know as Patna. The name Pataliputra inspires pride in us. Therefore, we ask the government to rename Patna back to Pataliputra," he stated.
Mentioning President Murmu's address, Kushwaha remarked that remembering historical achievements motivates future generations and fortifies India's path toward becoming a developed nation.
"The President indicated that by recalling the significant milestones and contributions of our ancestors, we inspire the younger generation and hasten our journey toward a developed India. These remarks remind us of the era when India was referred to as the 'Golden Bird'," he added.
During his speech in the Rajya Sabha, Kushwaha underscored the vast reach of the Mauryan Empire, noting that during that time, India's territory encompassed what is now Bangladesh, Bhutan, Afghanistan, and Nepal.
"The remnants of that glorious period are still visible to us today. It is our responsibility to clear away the dust that has settled on that history and revive it," he remarked.
He emphasized that Bihar achieved its zenith during the Mauryan era, and its historical symbols remain globally acknowledged.
Pointing to other cities and states that have reverted to names reflecting their cultural heritage, Kushwaha stated, "Calcutta was renamed Kolkata, Orissa became Odisha, and Bombay was changed to Mumbai. If these places can have their names changed, why not Patna to Pataliputra?"
This demand has once again brought the subjects of historical identity and cultural restoration to the forefront of political dialogue, especially in Bihar, where Pataliputra remains a pivotal part of the state's ancient heritage.
