Mumbai, Aug 5 (NationPress) Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has given the green light for the formation of the Maharashtra State River Rejuvenation Authority (MSRRA). This Authority is set to play a vital role in preserving and enhancing the natural flow of rivers, with an emphasis on decreasing pollution levels and promoting the overall rejuvenation of these water bodies.
During a comprehensive presentation, Environment Minister Pankaja Munde outlined the framework and vision for the Authority. She highlighted key responsibilities such as endorsing the 'DPR' (detailed project report) and basin management strategies for river rejuvenation, addressing encroachment challenges, land acquisition issues, and proposing selected projects for inclusion in national schemes.
The Chief Minister will serve as the Chairman, while the Environment Minister will assume the role of Vice Chairman.
A State Level Executive Committee will operate under the Chairmanship of the Environment Minister, comprising technical experts, legal and financial advisors, the Member Secretary of the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB), along with distinguished members from reputable institutions such as IIT, as mentioned by Minister Munde.
The Authority is expected to engage in extensive efforts aimed at ensuring sustainable revitalization of the state's rivers. Additionally, a dedicated secretariat led by the Member Secretary of the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board will be established for daily operational management.
In related news, Water Resources and Disaster Management Minister Girish Mahajan recently urged that ongoing irrigation projects should be fast-tracked to broaden the irrigation area within the state and guarantee reliable water supply for agriculture.
“The approved works are set to expand the irrigation area. It is essential to meticulously plan and prioritize these initiatives. Furthermore, the department needs to accurately strategize the recovery of water strips and execute actions accordingly,” emphasized the minister during the meeting.
In the recent 87th meeting of the Governing Board of the Vidarbha Irrigation Development Corporation, 42 topics were thoroughly examined. Meanwhile, the 71st meeting of the Governing Board of the Tapi Irrigation Development Board discussed 25 topics, and the 88th meeting of the Governing Board of the Konkan Irrigation Development Corporation covered 18 topics in detail, as per the minister's report.
