Mumbai, Dec 15 (NationPress) Renowned Punjabi artist Malkit Singh has expressed his views on the increasing role of artificial intelligence in the music sector.
In a revealing interview with IANS, he conveyed that while technology is set to advance, the unique quality of a true human voice can never be duplicated. He underscored the enchantment of live performances, asserting that although AI can aid in music production, the connection and emotion that an artist shares with their audience is profoundly human.
When questioned about whether the emergence of AI in the music scene poses a risk to artists, Malkit Singh replied that despite technological advancements, the human voice is irreplaceable. He elaborated, “Not at all. Technology will progress, but the voice is a divine gift. AI can generate music, but it cannot perform live. The real voice is what matters when an artist faces an audience. While music and instruments can be taught, the voice is sacred.”
Reflecting on the current digital landscape where songs can go viral in mere moments, Singh acknowledged that long-form storytelling in music has become more difficult. He reminisced about the days of cassettes and CDs, when music had a prolonged impact and artists remained cherished in listeners’ hearts for years.
The singer of ‘Tutak Tutak Tutiya’ remarked, “In the past, we had cassettes and CDs. Now everything is digital and swift. Artists can be forgotten within days. However, timeless tracks endure. We were fortunate to experience that golden period; those songs continue to resonate today.”
Malkit Singh also commented on the current prominence of Punjabi music in Bollywood. He noted that Punjabi tracks resonate with audiences almost instantly due to their infectious rhythms and dynamic energy. The ‘Gur Nalo Ishq Mitha’ vocalist added that during his performances for European crowds, people joyfully repeat Punjabi phrases, highlighting the genre's global allure.
“Punjabi music has an immediate connection with people because of its beat and vibrancy. Even without understanding the lyrics, one can dance to it. While classical music is beautiful, it may feel heavy for many. Punjabi songs are straightforward, catchy, and easy to sing along with. Even in European venues, audiences are enthusiastic about repeating Punjabi expressions,” Malkit explained.
