Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh on Wednesday, 10 June met Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari at his official residence in New Delhi to discuss the progress of National Highway projects and accelerate road infrastructure development across the state. The Chief Minister sought early approval for several pending highway proposals, including an elevated highway project described as critical for urban mobility in Imphal.

Key Discussions at the Meeting

According to a senior official from the Chief Minister's Office (CMO), Singh briefed Gadkari on steps taken to resolve long-pending issues on two critical corridors: the Imphal–Jiribam National Highway (NH-37), which connects Manipur with Assam, and the Imphal–Dimapur highway, linking the state with Nagaland. Singh also urged Gadkari to expedite sanction of a proposed elevated highway project in Manipur, calling it vital for improving urban mobility and overall state connectivity. Gadkari, according to the official, responded positively and assured support.

Land Compensation Issues Addressed

On NH-37 (the Imphal–Jiribam highway), Singh informed the Union Minister that land compensation disputes in Noney district had been resolved following a revised survey. The state Cabinet has since approved the compensation package, and construction work has already commenced. Similarly, on the Imphal–Dimapur (Nagaland) highway, the Chief Minister said that issues in the mountainous Kangpokpi district have been addressed, with the state Cabinet approving a special package to facilitate project progress.

Imphal–Ukhrul–Jessami Corridor Still Pending

Singh also updated Gadkari on the status of the Imphal–Ukhrul–Jessami highway project, acknowledging that land-related issues continue to persist along this corridor. The state government, he said, is actively engaging with stakeholders to achieve an early resolution and ensure smooth implementation. This project is seen as strategically important for connectivity with Ukhrul district and the border areas near Jessami.

Following the meeting, Singh posted on social media: 'The Hon'ble Union Minister responded positively and assured his support for the development of Manipur's road infrastructure. I express my sincere gratitude for his continued guidance and commitment towards the progress of the state.'

The discussions come at a time when Manipur is pressing hard for improved road connectivity to boost economic activity and ease transportation across its hilly terrain. The state's highway network is central to its development agenda, given that road links to neighbouring states — Assam and Nagaland — serve as lifelines for trade, logistics, and movement of people.
