Did Amy Winehouse's father apologize in court over an outburst?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Los Angeles, Dec 10 (NationPress) Mitch Winehouse, the father of the late singer-songwriter Amy Winehouse, expressed his regret to a High Court judge during legal proceedings against two friends of his daughter.
Mitch shared his feelings of being “very, very upset” after it was implied that he and his family have benefited financially from Amy's estate, as reported by Mirror.co.uk.
He refuted claims that he was suing the friends out of “petty jealousy” over their earnings from auctioning items following her passing. The High Court learned that Mitch Winehouse, as the administrator of Amy's estate, is pursuing legal action against her stylist Naomi Parry and friend Catriona Gourlay for claims of profit from selling numerous items at auctions held in the US in 2021 and 2023.
The allegations suggest that these women lacked the authority to sell the items and failed to notify Mr. Winehouse of their actions. Both Parry and Gourlay are defending themselves, asserting that the items were either gifts from Amy or were already theirs. Tragically, Amy passed away at the age of 27 due to alcohol poisoning in July 2011.
During his testimony on Tuesday, the court learned that Mitch had approached the police regarding this matter, only to be informed that it was a civil case due to the ongoing High Court proceedings.
When questioned about whether he aimed to portray Ms. Parry and Ms. Gourlay as criminals, he responded, “If they had stolen things, they would be criminals, wouldn’t they?”
Despite this, he acknowledged that he had no proof that either woman had taken anything from his daughter’s belongings. Beth Grossman, representing Ms. Parry, challenged him, stating, “These young women are not thieves nor dishonest, Mr. Winehouse. They have always been honest with you. They sold items they owned, which you were aware of, and you brought these proceedings out of nothing but petty jealousy, as they made a profit at the auction. Do you have a response to that?”
To which Winehouse replied, “Yes, you are wrong.” He believed the proceeds from the 2021 auction, which generated approximately $1.4 million for the estate, would be divided among him, Amy's mother Janis, and the Amy Winehouse Foundation.
