PM Modi Critiques Congress for 'Foeticide' Against Women Empowerment Bill
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, April 18 (NationPress) Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched a fierce critique against the Congress party and its coalition partners on Saturday, accusing them of engaging in “foeticide” regarding the ‘Nari Shakti Vandan’ Amendment, a significant legislative step aimed at empowering women in the political arena of India.
In his address to the nation, the Prime Minister clarified that the aim of the amendment is not to strip anyone of their rights, but to bestow long-overdue rights upon women, who represent half of India's populace.
He pointed out that the Bill intends to ensure adequate representation for women in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, thereby dismantling the barriers that have obstructed their advancement for many years.
PM Modi characterized the ‘Nari Shakti Vandan’ Amendment as a monumental initiative, comparing it to a sacred “Maha Yagna” conducted with sincerity and noble intent.
He asserted that this amendment is not just about creating new avenues for the women of modern India but also about allowing them to thrive by removing impediments in their way.
The Prime Minister underscored that the amendment aims to incorporate women as genuine partners in the nation’s development journey, promoting greater inclusivity across various societal segments.
He mentioned that it responds to the current needs by ensuring a proportional increase in representation across all states, whether in the North, South, East, or West, regardless of their size or population density.
This, he argued, would elevate the voices of all states within Parliament and reinforce the federal essence of the nation.
However, PM Modi expressed profound disappointment regarding the Opposition's reaction, accusing the Congress, Trinamool Congress, Samajwadi Party, and DMK of “brutally undermining” this initiative both in Parliament and in public perception.
He further alleged that these parties acted against the essence of the Constitution and the welfare of women by obstructing the Bill.
The Prime Minister recalled that historically, the Congress has shown resistance to women’s reservation and has consistently thrown obstacles in the way of such initiatives.
He stated that once again, the Congress and its allies resorted to what he termed as misleading arguments, diversionary tactics, and statistical issues to impede the legislation.
PM Modi remarked that their actions have revealed their true position before the women of India.
He expressed his personal hope that the Congress would take this opportunity to amend its long-standing stance and make amends for past actions, but lamented that they failed to seize the moment.
Reaffirming his dedication to women's empowerment, the Prime Minister insisted that significant progress in India cannot be realized without granting women their rightful place in decision-making processes.
