Patna, Nov 6 (NationPress) As the first phase of the Bihar Assembly elections unfolds, Bihar Rajya Sabha MP Upendra Kushwaha stated on Thursday that the turnout for the NDA is exceeding expectations.
In an interview with IANS, Upendra Kushwaha remarked, “The support for the NDA is significantly higher than what we had anticipated. Information gathered through television and various channels clearly indicates that the NDA is on track for a historic victory in Bihar.”
When addressing the Mahagathbandhan’s assertions of success in the Bihar elections, he responded, “They will, of course, claim that. The initial phase of voting is still in progress, and the next phase is yet to occur. If they begin discussing their potential defeat now, it will demoralize their supporters. To maintain their spirits, they make such statements. However, the evidence is clear — Bihar is casting its votes overwhelmingly in favor of the NDA.”
Currently, the first phase of the Bihar Assembly elections is taking place, with over 3.75 crore voters determining the fate of candidates in 121 out of the total 243 constituencies. This first phase holds particular importance for the Opposition Mahagathbandhan (Grand Alliance), which had claimed 63 of these seats in the 2020 elections. The ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) — composed of the BJP and the Janata Dal(United) — had won 55 seats in the same constituencies.
This round of voting is also crucial for smaller parties that are allied with both major coalitions. The Communist Party of India (Marxist–Leninist) or CPI(ML), which recorded one of the highest strike rates in 2020, will have 10 of its 20 contested seats up for grabs in this phase. The party currently holds six of these seats, making it essential for them to retain these constituencies to maintain their previous electoral performance.
Within the NDA, the Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) or LJP(RV), led by Chirag Paswan, is contesting 29 seats across Bihar, with 10 of these in the first phase. Notably, the NDA currently holds only one of these ten seats. The distribution of seats for the LJP(RV) had previously sparked tension among alliance partners, especially the JD(U), which believed the allocation did not reflect the LJP(RV)’s current strength in the Assembly.
