On November 5, 2023, in New Delhi, the Vice Chairman of NDMC, Kuljeet Singh Chahal, officially opened two newly revamped parks in Sarojini Nagar—Keshav Park and Sarojini Park. This initiative reflects the Council’s dedication to enhancing urban environments.
During the inauguration, Chahal highlighted the significance of Sarojini Nagar Market as one of Delhi’s premier commercial areas, drawing in hundreds of visitors daily.
He reiterated that the mission of the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) extends beyond just meeting civic needs. It aims to enrich urban areas by adding aesthetic and recreational value for both residents and tourists.
Chahal detailed that the upgrades to these parks included extensive greening efforts, tree planting, landscaping, the addition of benches, beautification projects, and the upkeep of civil infrastructure—transforming these spaces into lively and inviting green environments for the community.
Although the NDMC encompasses only 3% of the total area of Delhi, it remarkably maintains 55% of its jurisdiction under green cover.
Attendees included Ashok Kumar Kalra, the president of the Sarojini Nagar Market Traders Association (MTA), along with Vice President Surjit Singh Arora, General Secretary Nitin Bhatia, other MTA representatives, NDMC Department Heads, and numerous visitors from the market.
The NDMC oversees 1,450 acres of green spaces, featuring major parks such as Nehru Park, Central Park, and Sanjay Lake.
Chahal also shared the council’s impressive planting achievements for this year, reporting that from April 1 to October 31, NDMC planted 3,426 trees, 2,993,429 shrubs, and 502 bamboo plants throughout its area.
To foster public involvement, NDMC launched a special plantation initiative under the “One Tree in the Name of Mother” campaign, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, which encourages participation from citizens, students, and both government and private sectors.
Furthermore, NDMC collaborated with over 20 international embassies—such as those from Australia, Denmark, Korea, Portugal, and Lithuania—to plant trees, demonstrating a shared commitment to enhancing greenery.
Chahal emphasized that NDMC's green initiatives showcase how urban greenery can transform cities into vibrant and livable spaces.
He urged both visitors and local traders to support NDMC in keeping the parks clean, green, and appealing.
The Sarojini Nagar Market Traders Association expressed gratitude for NDMC’s efforts to improve urban green areas.
In recognition of their contributions to the park redevelopment, Chahal awarded certificates to officers and staff from NDMC’s Health, Horticulture, and Civil Departments.
He concluded by stating that these green initiatives not only enhance the beauty of New Delhi but also play a crucial role in reducing pollution—advancing the vision of a clean and green city aligned with the Prime Minister’s goals.
