New Delhi, April 26 (NationPress) Public areas within the bustling Sarojini Nagar Market in south Delhi were thoroughly cleaned using water jets as part of a comprehensive cleanliness initiative by the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) on Saturday morning, according to an official report.
The operation, spearheaded by NDMC Vice Chairman Kuljeet Singh Chahal, concluded around 3 a.m. after four hours of diligent cleaning.
Chahal remarked, "Given the significant daytime foot traffic, only dry cleaning had been performed during nighttime until now. However, in light of increasing demands, wet cleaning has been introduced to transform this market into a model of cleanliness."
"Sarojini Nagar is among the most frequented and vital markets in Delhi, attracting thousands of visitors daily. Enhanced cleanliness will not only serve customers and shopkeepers but will also elevate the area's overall reputation," Chahal emphasized.
The cleaning campaign commenced around 11 p.m. on Friday night and persisted until 3 a.m. the following morning, initially starting with dry cleaning followed by wet cleaning, as per the official.
A team of 12 members from the Health Department, along with supervisors, executed the task, utilizing mechanical road sweepers, high-pressure jet wash systems, and disinfectant technology to meticulously clean roads, drains, and footpaths.
Chahal indicated that this operation will be executed nightly.
The night-time intensive cleanliness campaign was carried out with support from representatives of the Khan Market Traders Association, Bapu Market Traders Association, Sarojini Nagar Vegetable Market Traders Association, numerous shopkeepers, senior officials from the Health and Civil Engineering Departments, and council sanitation workers.
Chahal noted that earlier phases of the campaign were successfully conducted at Khan Market and Janpath Market.
He announced that such cleaning initiatives would now proceed as a regular night-time wet cleaning effort in these markets.
The NDMC plans to expand this initiative to all major markets and residential complexes within the next three months, he stated.
This model will be replicated in Connaught Place, Pandara Road, Gole Market, Malcha Marg, Khanna Market, Shankar Market, Yusuf Sarai, and other significant markets.
The campaign will also be launched in all NDMC residential complexes with the cooperation of Resident Welfare Associations and local residents, he added.
Chahal concluded that this focused cleanliness drive represents another robust stride towards the vision of 'Viksit NDMC @2047', aimed at making the capital more modern, clean, and citizen-friendly.
