Synopsis
Key Takeaways
In a significant development on March 16, 2023, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) submitted a chargesheet against six individuals accused of intimidating witnesses to hinder the trial concerning the murder of Puducherry BJP leader Senthil Kumaran, as reported by officials.
The individuals named in the chargesheet are Nithyanantham also known as Nithi, Siva Sankar, Vengatesh, Ezhumalai, Heram (alias TR or Karthi), and Udhayakumar.
These suspects face multiple charges in the Puducherry Special Court under various provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, and the NIA Act.
Notably, four of the accused—Nithyanantham, Siva Sankar, Vengatesh, and Ezhumalai—had previously been charged for their involvement in the main terror offense associated with the murder of the BJP leader.
The latest chargesheet presents additional allegations against these four and implicates Karthi and Udhayakumar for reportedly illicitly acquiring witness information, approaching them, and issuing threats.
Senthil Kumaran, a prominent local BJP figure, was tragically murdered in March 2023 by six assailants on motorcycles who utilized explosives and deadly weapons in Villianur, Puducherry. The investigation was initially conducted by local law enforcement before being handed over to the NIA.
During the ongoing trial, it was uncovered that the four previously charged individuals conspired with the other two from inside Central Prison Kalapet and Special Prison Yanam in Puducherry to unlawfully procure confidential documents, as stated by officials.
The suspects allegedly used these documents to pinpoint witnesses, including those under protection, with the aim of intimidating them and obstructing their testimony in court.
Upon uncovering this conspiracy, the NIA sought a court order to transfer the main suspect, Nithyanantham, from Central Prison Kalapet to Special Prison Yanam.
Additionally, two accomplices were arrested and placed in remand. In September 2025, the NIA executed searches at the prisons and residences of the involved parties, seizing numerous incriminating materials tied to the conspiracy.
The NIA continues to investigate this witness tampering conspiracy and has urged the public to provide any relevant information, assuring that their identities will remain confidential.
