Patna, March 22 (NationPress) The infamous thief Chunmun Jha died from numerous gunshot wounds on Saturday after a violent confrontation with law enforcement in Bihar's Araria district, according to an official statement.
Araria Superintendent of Police (SP) Anjani Kumar informed IANS that Jha passed away while receiving treatment at Sadar Hospital, Araria.
The clash took place at Dhalha Canal, within the jurisdiction of the Narpatganj police station. A coordinated raid by the Special Task Force (STF) and local police was executed to capture Jha, who was a notorious figure behind several high-stakes robberies. During the operation, he was hit by three gunshots.
"Our team successfully subdued him after a heated exchange of fire. The injured police personnel were transported to Sadar Hospital for medical care, while Jha, who sustained injuries from gunfire, succumbed during his treatment," stated SP Kumar.
As police approached Dhalha Canal, Jha and an accomplice tried to escape, leading to a gunfight. Although Jha was ultimately apprehended, his accomplice got away. Five police officers were injured in the incident.
The injured officers include Mohammad, a sub-inspector with the STF; Kumar Vikas, the station house officer (SHO) of Narpatganj police station; Nagesh Kumar, an STF driver; and STF members Sahabuddin Ansari and Deepak Kumar.
In the aftermath of the encounter, a significant police presence was established in the region to avert any further incidents.
Jha was a primary suspect in numerous significant crimes, including the Tanishq showroom heists in Purnea and Arrah.
On July 26, 2024, a gang of six, including Jha, stole gold jewelry worth Rs 2 crore from a Purnea shop. On March 10 of this year, Jha and his crew raided a Tanishq jewelry outlet in Arrah, Bhojpur district, making off with valuables exceeding Rs 25 crore.
In reaction to the Arrah robbery, Bhojpur police apprehended two of the thieves shortly after in a brief encounter. Both suspects suffered leg injuries, and two bags containing portions of the stolen jewelry were retrieved from them.
Jha gained notoriety for his serious criminal activities across various districts, particularly in the Seemanchal region of Bihar.
