While addressing the audience, DGP Khurania highlighted that Odisha boasts a coastline stretching nearly 574 km, which is crucial for economic activities, particularly with significant ports like Paradip and Gopalpur.
He emphasized the presence of 16 islands along the coast, underscoring the importance of coastal security as a primary concern for both the Union and state administrations.
During the event, DGP Khurania mentioned a long-term strategy initiated by the Odisha Police aimed at reinforcing and modernizing the coastal security framework within the state.
He revealed that the state government has allocated Rs 149 crore in the annual budget for this initiative in the current fiscal year.
Over the past year, enhancements have been made to the resources available to the Odisha Police to improve maritime surveillance.
"We have acquired advanced drones for aerial monitoring and engaged additional fishing trawlers to bolster sea patrolling," he stated.
The DGP noted that the number of patrol vessels has increased, resulting in quicker and more effective coastal surveillance.
Furthermore, he mentioned that CCTV systems are being installed at all major coastal fishing centers, allowing live feeds to be monitored at nearby marine police stations and the Central Command and Control Centre in Bhubaneswar.
The live feed from drone-mounted cameras will also be observed at the central control room for real-time aerial oversight, the DGP added.
Special Police Officers have been assigned to intensify coastal patrolling and monitoring, with a comprehensive multi-layered security protocol being established across all coastal and island regions.
The DGP reiterated the tradition of hoisting the Tricolour on all of Odisha's islands on Republic Day to foster public awareness regarding coastal security.
He expressed satisfaction over the substantial turnout of local residents, NCC cadets, and cultural groups at the ceremony.
In his remarks, the DGP extended gratitude to various government departments, agencies, the NCC Directorate, and local cultural organizations for their assistance, stating that public involvement will be instrumental in further enhancing Odisha's coastal security in the future.
