Bhubaneswar, Aug 5 (NationPress) The Odisha Health and Family Welfare Minister Mukesh Mahaling engaged with the Union Health Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda in New Delhi on Tuesday, advocating for the swift issuance of the Letter of Permission (LoP) to facilitate the admission of 100 MBBS students each at the Pavitra Mohan Pradhan Medical College (PMPMC), Talcher, and the Government Medical College (GMC), Phulbani, for the 2025-26 academic session.
According to an official statement released on Tuesday, Mahaling also discussed with the Union Health Minister various strategies to further enhance healthcare services in Odisha.
“The state health minister has called for immediate action from the Union Health Minister to secure the LoP for the admission of 100 MBBS students at both institutions for the upcoming academic year,” the statement detailed.
These two institutions have been established recently to address the increasing demand for medical education in Odisha.
The Deans and Principals of both institutions submitted their applications for the LoP on January 18, 2025, via the National Medical Commission (NMC) portal.
Teams from the NMC conducted physical inspections of the colleges on June 23, 2025, for PMPMC, Talcher, and on May 28, 2025, for GMC, Phulbani.
The state government has allocated necessary funds to enhance facilities and ensure quality medical education at these institutions.
Once the LoP is granted, the total number of government medical colleges in the state will rise from 14 to 16, significantly boosting the healthcare infrastructure.
This increase will also elevate the total number of MBBS seats in government institutions to 1800.
Notable attendees at the meeting included Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, Minister of Odisha Panchayati Raj & Drinking Water and Rural Development, Rabi Narayan Naik, MP from Cuttack Bhartruhari Mahtab, Bargarh MP Pradeep Purohit, and MP from Kandhamal constituency Sukanta Kumar Panigrahi.
