Asim Munir's Reckless Move: Pakistan Faces Desperate Times Amid Afghanistan Conflict
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Islamabad, March 21 (NationPress) The Pakistani Army Chief, Asim Munir, has made a profoundly questionable choice by instigating conflict with Afghanistan at a time when the nation is already facing internal instability. This decision has ensnared Pakistan in a dilemma with limited chances for a quick resolution. By initiating airstrikes along the Durand Line, the leadership in Rawalpindi has now added the Afghan Taliban to its expanding list of adversaries, as emphasized in a recent report.
“Despite employing overwhelming force, including drone strikes and armed helicopter operations, the persistent assaults on the Pakistan Army, paramilitary forces, and law enforcement in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan show no signs of diminishing. The situation has been further complicated by Field Marshal Munir’s unwise declaration of war against Afghanistan. In essence, he has plunged his nation into a dire predicament from which escape appears extremely challenging in the foreseeable future,” the article from Eurasia Review stated.
It noted that U.S. President Donald Trump has neglected his self-identified role as a global “peace maker” by not intervening to stop the “open war” that Pakistan has initiated against Afghanistan.
“Such a sudden shift by a Nobel Peace Prize contender raises serious doubts about whether Trump may have instructed his 'favorite' Field Marshal to retaliate against Kabul for rejecting his request for the Bagram air base. While this may seem far-fetched, it reflects the fury of a spurned Trump, evident in events such as the abduction of the Venezuelan president and his spouse, and the situation in Iran,” noted Nilesh Kunwar, a retired Indian Army officer.
“While Trump is engaged in conflict overseas and can withdraw at will, his 'favorite' Field Marshal lacks that privilege. This begs the question: how could a military leader expect a neighboring nation known as the 'graveyard' of empires to succumb to bombardment? When even the U.S.-Israeli alliance, despite wielding highly advanced weaponry against Iran, has failed to conquer it, expecting Kabul to capitulate is merely a case of unrealistic expectations,” he added.
The report also indicated that while it remains uncertain how Munir acquired the title of Trump's “favorite” Field Marshal, it is clear that his “total and unquestioning obedience” endears him to the U.S. President, and Munir has consistently met this standard.
“Despite condemning the brutal U.S.-Israel airstrikes against Iran, Islamabad has been careful not to label Washington as the aggressor.”
